I'm going abroad for a while and will be leaving my tower at home. I'm therefore searching for a good laptop as a primary computer while I am abroad. I was thinking about getting ASUS's UX31 or the Lenovo Y470 and am looking for suggestions/comments.

Here are my search requirements:
  • ~1000$ Budget
  • Portable. Will be probably transporting it around daily.
  • Good battery life. Would be very content with ~5hrs.
  • 13.3" to 14" screen size. Preferably, a nice resolution (1600x1200).
  • Obviously, needed for typical internet browsing, movies/music, word processing.
  • Also needed for use in programming and CAD.
  • Would like to be able to perhaps run a few of my steam games (i.e. Portal 2, Fallout: New Vegas)

I considered the Transformer Prime until I realized I might need the computer for more serious stuff like CAD.

I'd also consider the Sony Vaio S.

-i5-2430M
-AMD 6630M 1GB
-7 hours battery
13.3" 1600x900 screen
weighs like 3.9 pounds

Cross the Air and UX31 off your list, integrated is no good for gaming.

Other options - Acer 3830TG or 4830TG, both have Nvidia 540M, i3 or i5, ~8 hours battery, 1" thick, 4 or 5 pounds respectively. The 4830 doesn't offer much over the Y470 except battery life.

I would definitely look at something with Optimus if you are wanting good battery life. AFAIK, the best you can do with Optimus is the 560m, but that is only on 17"+ The Y470 of course is a great price/performer, but the screen res is not what you want. If could up to a 15.6" you can find 1080p easily enough. The ThinkPad T420 has a 1600x900 screen option with a decent GPU that should handle steam games OK enough.

The Y470 will get you well over 5 hours of battery life and Acer has know to have heating issues.

Check out Sony S series 13" with 1600x900 and a decent GPU. Looks like may be what you want.

Dang was responding so long didnt see the mention above already.

The sony vaio looks very appealing, but I don't think I will manage to receive it before my departure.
Will a UX31 or Air be good enough for everything else minus the gaming?
Maybe I can install Win7 as a dual boot on an air. Anyway, I'll keep on looking.

Howabout the series 9 btw?

Why do you want an ultrabook if you want something powerful? Ultrabooks aren't bad but the target audience is people who could get by with a netbook (Ultrabooks are faster, but that's beside the point). Admittedly if you're just doing basic CAD (whatever you'd have to do for an engineering class), any CPU would suffice, but if it's more advanced, may as well get a fast dual-core.

Here's another Vaio S pre-built. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-VPCSA3AFX-BI-13-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B005JY9F9Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1325811410&sr=8-2

If you just want something really lightweight with good battery life, have you considered the Portege R835? It's like 3.2 pounds(lighter than some ultrabooks, within ~0.3 pounds of a Macbook Air 13, and if you add a 128GB SSD its still $350 cheaper), standard-voltage i3 or i5, 1" thick, 7-8 hours battery. Might be a good middle ground between a slightly heavier laptop with discrete graphics and an ultrabook. http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Portege-R835-P81-13-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B005KP070I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1325812251&sr=8-2
