Conroe Ops/Cycle - Page 2

Conroe is one of the first to eliminate the "tunnel vision" of only looking at the ops/MHz logic. They focus more on efficiency and overall logical performance. Don't get caught up in the old way of thinking, Conroe is dynamic!
EDIT: Nice article Ropey! I read that a while back and if you really want to see a rough translation, this sentance probably does it best:

I think, if you read that white paper carefully, you will come to the same conclusion I have. In the old days, the actual "pipeline" for instruction execution was simple enough to be able to say with relative certainty that any given instruction would take exactly X number of clock cycles.

Now...the architecture is so freakin advanced that it's hard to say with any certainty HOW many ops/cycle the "Core" will do. It totally depends on how well optimized the instructions are and, proximity-wise, how close the instructions and data are to each other (L1, L2, DDR2 etc..).

So, if someone comes up and says "OH! It's BLAH!".... They are pulling that info out of their butts. In the white paper, Intel mentions 6 ops/cycle before any optimizations. Then you say "If this optimization is used, it's 10% more. If this level of cache is used, it's 33% more" etc.. No hard numbers.

I think the era where we can really understand the microprocessor architecture (without being an electrical engineer) is coming to an end.

The frequency of Intel core architecture build releases has increased. Both of the above architectures are being designed in Israel. .45nm --> .32nm Nehalem will not be a shrink/optimization. It will be an entirely new core architecture as will Gesher.

Well, I'd say we can easily reach conclusion based on a simple benchmark between a core and amd system (of course, similar setup as possible). The ratio would be then multiply by 9 (9ops/cyl of AMD64), see if it is really around 12. But I'd say it's 12.

Again, matters are not as simple as mere ops per cycle. There is the whole different architecture thing, pipelines, etc. etc.

And I think if you want an as honest as possible comparison, compare with a D9xx series chip. Then you can use the same rig to do the compare
