I m not sure where you can get the 6970 for $300?

Gaming wise the 6970 might be slightly better. A OC 448 core is pretty much on par with a GTX 570 which is same thing as the 6970, but then again the 6970 OC will be 5-10% better only. Unless you can get the 6970 for $300, can't warranty the extra $ for it.

If your buying a card to bench.. then get the 560..

If your buying a card to game.. then get the 6970..

Vram is important gaming.. synthetic benchies do not benefit from extra vram, unless you are benching 1080+ resolutions with AA and AF

560 Ti is way more better for gaming because the strong tessellation and physx , also you will get better performance in 3Dmark 11 than the 6970.

lots of opinions..

I would think that if you had a choice between a 'flagship' model.. and a 'special edition' mid-range GPU.. there would only be one clear answer for me. Considering price is similar in your case... i think its a real no-brainer.

*again - not sure if your a bencher or not.. but 6xxx GPU's do not scale on -0 temps for benching.. while Nvidia 5xx's will do +190% OC with -0 temps. For daily use though.. on air.. the lower power consumption and ridiculously good air cooler on the lightning is sure to be appreciated.

Pending on where you buy from the 6950 TOXIC with its wicked unlock rate(just flip the switch) was only 280 brand new, witht he 7XXX cards 6950 TOXICS are poping up for sale in the 280-300 and you will know they unlock or dont befor you buy. I payed 280 for mine BRAND NEW in box, worth more than that.

So I guess my final question would be...

Is there a way to circumvent the OCP on the Lightning altogether?

And no, I'm not going to be freezing either card. I do however appreciate a fun late night, windows open, air cooled max clocked benching session from time to time just to see what the cards can do.

I appreciate all the info so far guys. thumb.gif

No need to wait. I'll buy one of these 2 now, and when the time comes, I'm sure I'll move to a 7xxx series card. I change GPU's about as often as I change my underwear (once a month or so)! wheee.gif

I have the MSI 560 448 TF3 myself, it goes for around 265€ here while the lighning is 350€ - too big of a difference if you ask me, especially since most 560 448's have Arkham city with them for free...

Power consumption on the Lightning is slightly more than a 448c. Just saying...

And both cards offer good to great air cooling solutions. It's not like the Lightning or 448c is significantly better in the cooling solution department.
