And a 2500K.

Build's for a friend, and I'm not usually an Intel guy, so I'm asking OCN. Outside recommendations to replace what he has would be appreciated. He's not going to get the sound card, so don't comment on that. He won't be ordering the parts until early March either.

Is that CL7 ram really necessary and @ 1333...? Can easily get 8gb for around $30
Hell for that price you can easily get 16gb @ 1600 CL9.

Also. why mATX, 2500k, 560 and a WD 1TB @ $140

That list makes my eyes bleed.

New list.

$50 case (ATX) like the HAF 912 or a LianLi
650-750w psu ~$70
Microcenter Combo 2500k/Z68 (ATX) $270+
8gb @ 1600 CL9 ~$30
HD 6950 2GB ~$230

Also check back to see if Crucial fixes the 5200hr problem in a month or two.

He wants something smaller that he can take to school and back with ease, that's why I recommended mATX. The M4 recommendation was before the recent bug came to light.

I'll have him update his list accordingly. Only question I do have though is about the RAM. 1.5V for Core i series processors, correct?

That RAM is totally not worth it, not unless you are doing some synthetic benchmark. Just get a regular 1.5 V CL9 1333 MHz RAM.

Yes, it is recommended to get 1.5 V RAM, though it can go up to 1.65 V.

So a LAN rig? Or is he going to park it there as soon as he moves in? Still not worth going mATX for.
Especially since the design of mATX boards will limit OC potential.

OTOH, a mATX or even ITX i3 build is not a bad idea.

Other option is to get a case like the Cooler Master Storm Scout.
