If you open up CPU-z it will state what stepping/revision your cpu has. It will either be C0 or E0 and usually the E0 is a slightly better when it comes to overclocking and temps.

I would also download prime95 and run small FFT to check stability

Max voltage is 1.45v, max VID is 1.36v , so long as your temps are manageable, you can clock as high as your processor will let you. Anything below 1.3v is fairly conservative IMO.
IMO if you're at or under 1.4V and getting not much over 60C at load, you'll be fine.

The E8400 in my profile has run 4.3 for a couple years now at 1.32V with an H5O.

Another reality is that your motherboard will die long before your CPU. Your board is what you really should worry about. That means no crazy voltages, and cooling on the NB.

It's not the GHz that matter, it's the voltage and heat. And like I said, it's not your CPU that will die. I have never seen a single CPU die in 14 years of overclocking.
