Can the I/O connectors on a motherboard be shifted?

Thread Starter
Title says it all, I'm looking to mount a mobo in a position which will leave the I/O ports inaccessible (integrated peripherals connectors). I've seen a few mod where people have run power leads through their case to create a remote plug for their PSU but i haven't been able to find any examples/explanations which offer an easy way to shift the I/O connectors. While I'm going I'd also like to ask if anyone knows of an easy way to install a GFX card into a mobo remotely (ie, plug it into a socket that is several inches away from the actual motherboard and connect via cable or something..)

I spent a couple hours looking for answers to this stuff but i couldn't find anything, sorry if its already been covered somewhere

Thanks in advance guys =)

Here's some PCI extenders, there are a ton more available too if you search around:

As for moving the I/O panel, that would be a ton of work, a lot of soldering.

For the IO connectors, you can always purchase short extensions and mount the one end into your case to be accessible from the outside

Thanks for the link axipher, thats exactly what i was looking for with the PCI slots. Now I've just got to figure out how to hide a 10" ribbon... hopefully the drawbacks are negligible.

Radodrill, i suppose that's a viable option, if i can position the cards where they need to be with the PCI risers i suppose there's just Ethernet, sound and USB ports to take care of .. shouldn't be too rough if i can find somewhere in Oz to source the parts. I'm getting Inventor soon so hopefully ill be able to share some mock ups in the near future. Cheers fellas

I just remembered that there are some devices for front panel audio/USB that do not connect to the USB/Audio headers, but rather have a PCI pass-through for the cables and the cables plug into the connectors of the regular IO panel.

Network you can fairly easily do yourself by crimping on a male connector to plug into the MB then use a keystone jack on the other end.

If you're good at soldering, you can always get a perf board and some shielded wire and remove the connectors from the MB and relocate them; though for the network you'll want to be sure to use network cable rather than regular multi strand cable.
