Something is Dead, CPU or Mobo?

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I recently built a PC for my computer illiterate friend that worked for 3-4 days and then broke.

His exact description of what happened was this: "I kicked it and it brought a black screen [could be blue] saying something about the hard drive, then it wouldn't turn on".

I know that's a terrible description, but it's the best he can do.

Here are the tests I have performed

1) I have tried with his graphics card and onboard graphics to get a POST or beep code but i'm getting nothing.
2) Tried RAM in another PC and it works, so not RAM
3) Tried with different PSU, still nothing
4) Removed the whole thing from the case and jumped the PSU, still nothing
5) tried on a different monitor, nothing
6) Reset CMOS between all steps.

Current Theory

Based on the above, either CPU or motherboard seems to have gone.

My current feeling is Motherboard for 2 reasons: It produces No Beeps and The hard-drive error could have been related to motherboard SATA controller failure.

I am apprehensive to put the CPU in another PC, and would like to avoid this if possible.

Any Ideas?

Thanks in advance!

SPECS

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-M68MT
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2
GPU: MSI ATI 6850
RAM: Kingston DDR3
PSU: 500w Unbranded

If he kicked it, it may have shocked the backside of the motherboard. That's probably the problem. But why would you kick a PC?

I would try reseating the CPU. Maybe the kick jarred the contacts or something.

I say this a lot both in these forums and in real life: It's almost never the CPU, it's almost always the motherboard.

BinaryDemon:
Thanks, will try that. And I fully agree and say the same all too often, but as you can see it was built on a hideously low budget, so he can't afford to replace things unless totally sure.

Halostryker:
Damn right, I could have slapped him, but he assures me it was an accident...

EDIT
Sorry WhiteFire, missed you there, but glad people are generally reaching the Mobo consensus!

I'd take the back panel off so you can see the back of the motherboard and see if there are any damaged chips or solders.

He may also have jarred the PSU, unplug everything, and bend a paperclip and put it in the socket of the green wire and any black wire on the 24-pin motherboard connector. If the PSU turns on, it's the motherboard.

I've had it out and given it a thorough look, but I may have exaggerated the kick, he didnt "full on boot it", he just walked into it or something.

There are no lights or anything, but all fans spin up, including CPU fan plugged into board, not molex.
