SSD and HD recommendations

Hey there OCN,

I`m in the midst of a new build for my personal 2012 Dream PC and need some advice.

Just to get something out of the way, I`m waiting for the socket 2011 procs to come out and will be buying my Motherboard, Processor and graphics card last. I already have my Case (Corsair 650D), PSU (Antec True Power Quadro 1200W), CPU Cooler (Corsair H100), Blu-ray Burner (LG) and Memory (Corsair Vengeance 4 x 4Gb 1600mhz).

On to the advice.

I plan on having 2 120Gb SSD`s in RAID 0 for my OS and 4 3TB HDD`s in RAID 0 + 1 for storage.

I need to know which are the most reliable for the setup I`m anticipating and if it`s possible to have to different RAID configs on one controller.

Just wanted to let you know that the LGA 2011 CPUs have been out for a while now.

Also avoid the X79 Gigabyte boards for now since they are having VRM design issues.
Also avoid Crucial M4 until people confirm that they've fixed the hourly reboot bug.

If you're looking for SSD reliability, the Intel 510 ssds are going to cost you but have an amazing 5 year warranty and low failure rate.
Other than that, I'd still recommend the Crucial M4 drives if they can fix the bug.

Raid 0 for SSD's isn't really recommended. All you'll see is increased read speeds (which you probably won't notice anyways) and you lose TRIM.

In the end it might be better for you to just get a larger SSD and use a partition for Intel's smart cache.

The speed should negate the need for RAID 0 HDDs and save you money in today's HDD market.

RAID0 is more beneficial on HDD then on SSD. Really not worth it on SSD.

For SSD consider Intel 320/510, Crucial M4, Samsung 470/830, Plextor M3S, and Corsair Performance Pro.

Thanks very much for that. I'm not too familiar with the benefits of TRIM although I've heard alot of good things about enabling it. Is it really better to have TRIM support over RAID 0?

Also, while we're here, which CPU and board would you recommend in that case?

I'd like to have my storage drives sped up and mirrored, hence the 0 +1. Is it possible to have a RAID 0 config and a RAID 0 + 1 at the same time? Thanks for the advice btw. biggrin.gif

don't use the RAID 0 on SSD, it's pointless but why not to get a single 1TB until HDD's became more affordable smile.gif (thailand crysis).
About the brand, i recommand Curcial m4 SSD's low failure rate and very high performance smile.gif or Samsung thumb.gif

I really wouldn't recommend the LGA 2011 socket unless it offers something that the 1155/2600k (or even the 2500k) doesn't.

If you must insist, go for the 3930K and a nice ASUS or ASRock X79 board.

The 3930K is OOS @ newegg ATM.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'd like to ask, however, why exactly is it pointless? Is it because of SATA port limitations?

I think you may be right about socket 2011... I just want to future proof myself as much as possible but, at $700 for the Proc, I'm not sure anymore... thanks man

The Intel controllers should be able to handle Raid 0 SSDs. Like I mentioned earlier, you only gain increased read speeds. Check this video out. Depending on what you do, you might not really see the value of going for Raid 0 in real world applications.

I see you have a Q9650, the C2D/C2Q still perform well and they have a relatively high market value.

You could try selling the CPU here and using the money to upgrade to a 2600k/2500k and Z68 or just wait until Haswell.

Great video, that's what I was looking for, way to go man.

As for my current system, I'll be using it as a studio PC for my music/photography/videography projects. The PC I'm building now is for fun and folding wink.gif

You should avoid intel 39xx cpu's (but not necessarily the x79 chipset), too high prices for barely 15% performance increase, get the 3820 i7 cpu will be sold for about 285$ to OEM as far as i remember biggrin.gif
