Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 2GB - Low FPS problem - Page 4

@LoneMerc

Here is what I get on my Rig with only one HD6950, overclocked to 900Mhz | 1400Mhz

480

I suggest you try overclocking your card to the same settings, therefore you can see where you stand.

Btw low FPS in towns on Skyrim is normal, towns seem to kill system performance.

Right ok. I have upped them all, and re-tested unigine twice in a row and got similar benches with both:

700

Hi thanks for the post, I will try oc'in it to this setting after I get back as I just have to pop out now. It did seem to improve unigine when I oc'd it slightly as seen above, so I imagine this would do it just right.

Thanks all for the comments up to now, I'm sure we're getting there smile.gif

edit: what voltage should i set it to when i put 900mhz | 1400mhz?

You're actually right where you're supposed to be, I think. You're running Heaven at full settings, and you're getting really nice performance.

Yeah it seems to be ok for uniengine but not for games still, I quickly played crysis 2 and it is still not good, I think I should still be getting better?

448

Isn't that quite low? It drops to around 24-30 when action starts and is usually a contant 30-35 when just doing nothing on it.

I tried this and it was not stable. I did 900Mhz core, 1400Mhz memory and 1180voltage (with the 20%+ increase in power). It got around a quarter or half the way through a unigine benchmark before it started going all fuzzy and i think i saw a few artifacts too. After about 5 seconds or 10 seconds of that it went into some sort of weird mirror view! it split the unigine screen in half, I quit before i could get a picture and when I quit the desktop was the same, my gadgets on the right hand side of my desktop was cut in half and the other side to the gadget was on the left hand side of the screen! things was also fuzzing too, like a bad connection on a dvi-d lead (although not that, of course). I have reverted back to 880 / 1375 at 1175 (with the 20%+ increase in power) and it is once again stable, I have played half an hour of Crysis 2 with no problem, and the 2 benchmarks earlier where with the 880 / 1375 setting, so that is stable.

What now? Is this just an acceptable fps for my games? Perhaps it really is just me, I just do expect more fps from games than that with this card.

If this is of any consolation; CPU 980X @4.8GHz, 2x 6990 Crysis 2, Dx11, HR, Ultra + MLAA + all maxed out at 1920x1080. Look at the FPS.

Just enjoy the game.

Ouch! thats bad man. At least you won't experience lag with that fps, i get it with my 25fps when action starts tongue.gif

I'm not happy with the card though, for the price too (£240). What other cards do any of you recommend? the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6870 1GB OC Dual Fan Edition (click here for info) looks good, if I got 2 of them would that be better? or does anyone recommend better? I don't have long before my 7 day returns are up on this current card so I don't have long to decide what I'm going to do.

Not sure what you were expecting from one 6950 eh-smiley.gif

Your card is doing exactly as it should, but you are trying to run games at settings that were meant for crossfire/ sli. Drop the ego and turn off the AA and/ or maybe some of the shadows. Play around with the settings to get optimal fps. When I ran just one 6950 I had it clocked to 950/1450 @ 1.18v and could run games on max settings but it wasn't always optimal. I would drop the AA and then could enjoy them at wonderfully smooth fps.

BF3 for example on the Ultra tab setting on one 6950 overclocked I could avg 40 - 45fps which in that game is pretty playable, but dropping the MSAA and leaving everything else maxed out I avg 60fps consistantly with spikes as high as 75+ and you can hardly see the difference visually.

Either drop the AA or go xfire biggrin.gif

No ego my man, I'm not sure what to expect mate, thats the point of this thread tongue.gif I just believed it was low fps compared to others I've seen. If this performance is normal and I couldn't get better without xfiring then that's fine. Would it be more benificial for me to return this 6950 and xfire 2 other gpu's, such as a 6870? The price difference is very little, or just stick with the 6950 and in the future xfire another 6950?

I'll try dropping the AA on some of my games (although I'm fond of a little AA tongue.gif ) and try it again. Perhaps I am wrong in thinking I should be getting more than I am currently, but this is why I made the thread. I'm not certain what I should get with this 6950 so I needed clarification. If what I'm getting currently is perfectly acceptable for this card than all is well, I just wasn't sure is all.

Yeah, just keep it and get a second one later. If you CF 1gb cards you wont be able to run games on max anyway, with the latest games anyway, because they wont have enough v-ram. Also The 68xx series and below are on a different architecture that doesn't crossfire as well as the 69xx series so you will lose some FPS there, I say it's just best to wait it out!
Sorry wasn't trying to call you out like that I just see it too often where people get one decent gpu and expect it to be the end all.

Keep the card and Over clock it like a beast. 950/1450 seems to be the sweet spot on these bad boys and in Xfire it will change everything. thumb.gif

Note: My 6950's oc'd get the same performance, if not a little better in some games, than the 6990
