First Time Overclocker: i5 2500k @ 4.8ghz Validated, 1.408v

Thread Starter
I have never really tried overclocking my i5 2500k with a lower voltage. Set at auto, my Maximus IV likes to put the cpu at 1.49v. After a little bit of tweeking, I managed to get a validated 4.8ghz at 1.408v.

Is this good, or can I push it further?

What kind of cooling are you using and more important, what temperature do you get ?

I'm maintaining 27-30 degrees C idle, 58-62 degrees C under Prime95 after about an hour.

Prime95 for an hour doesn't mean that CPU is stable.
It could fail at 6 hours.

You must do a 12 hours test to ensure it's fully stable.
I'm pretty sure you'll get nasty temps after 12 hours with a h50 thought.

Max safe voltage is 1.425.

I'll be sure to do that overnight. I don't know about the nasty temps though. I've played Bad Company 2 for well over 6 hours in a row with temps barely above 40. I'll get back with you on this issue. I just wanted to see if 4.8 was a respectable overclock.

not bad for you're first oc thumb.gif and the temps seem decent to me, its just a matter of stability now so yeah as the others have stated 12+ hours on prime 95 is a good template, i myself prefer closer to 24 and maybe an hour of linx for temps but thats cos my comps are on 24/7.

edit* maybe 10-15 minutes of linx/ibt for a read on temps but they can find things that prime cannot on stability.
