I think it's bullcrap. The 1.425 V number is just what someone pulled out of their behind. There have been no overvolting deaths and people are doing 1.5 V as mentioned before.

I personally prefer to stay under 1.45 V because of the uncertainty of how much these chips can take. I've been to 1.65 V on air cooling for suicide runs though. You're good as long as you keep temperatures in check and as long as YOU feel safe. If YOU feel that a voltage is pushing it, back off and lower your OC.

But there have been cases where people run their CPUs at high voltage for long periods of time and their chips have degraded.
The chip doesn't have to die to be damaged.

That's actually really good for your first OC! I have the same chip (different MB) and I was uble to get up to 4.7GHz at first, then when I changed cases, I was able to get up to 4.88GHz. My temps are a little higher (about 60C under load), but I'm also just running on air (a hyper 212+), so I think that's pretty good. Just wanted to say, nice job for your first OC. Now either run 12+ hours of Price95 or start folding, that will tell you if your system is stable, if it doesn't BSOD after 12+ hours of Prime, you are good to go!

nice you got it from tomshardware if your getting it from there you must of mssed the 3rd post

Intel has verified (through their Sandy Bridge technical PDFs and online chats) that 1.52v is the max 'safe' vcore. As long as you can keep temps under control, you can go that high. Of course, keeping it lower than that would be a good idea, just in case...

1.52 is what i feel comfortable with but i dont need that much... i have had my chip as high as 1.7ish volts though and would do it again.

I don't think you get the point, I did a research on google and not Tomhardware, but every sites will tell you 1.425-1.45 is SAFE.

1.52 will most likely end up hurting the chip.

It's like saying the limit for this ferrari is 423Km/h.

Question is, how long will it last.


I agree, 1.52v is the highest safe voltage as said by intel.
As long as the temps are fine I guess it would work okay but I'm pretty sure there will be degradation over time.
EDIT: less than 10% of 2500k owner have what it takes to dissipate 1.52 heat generation. Water is recommanded, if not mandatory at that voltage.

i mean i understand thats what YOU think is the safe but is there any proof of it degrading at intels max voltage? im wondering myself since ive never heard of it not trying to be rude or anything

Personally, I'm fine with pushing the chip to and past intel's listed max safe voltage. I've run mine as high as 1.55v and my temps were in the low 70sC, but heck, when I had my stock cooler (remember that POS), I ran my system at 4.1GHz at 77C for about 3 months before I bought my Hyper 212+ so I'm not afraid to push the temps either. Honestly, I figure, even if the chip does degrade over time, I usually build a new system every 18 months to 2 years, so I'm not too worried about the chip degrading because I will replace it before it does.
