no as5 on the memory chips? they have something on top of them or something

Yes, AS5 conducts electricity (correct me if I'm wrong), so if it gets on the wires on the chips then it will conduct electricity and there goes the memory.

It will have a thermal pad on I think, I haven't checked on a X1900XT yet though. If not then it might have a non electrical-conducting thermal compound.

i dont have anything other than as5.

but wat ur saying that the thermal pad is non conductive, and that there is something on the memory chip itself? cause my old 6800gt didnt have anything to worry about on the chips, i just stuck as5 on there...

What I'm saying is that I think AS5 could be an electrical conductor, I think I read it somewhere. If you did it on your memory chips or your 6800 then you might have been lucky. If it sqaused over the edge and got to the connecting wires then there could be trouble.

as5 IS an elecrical conductor.... so? wouldnt i have to cross two points for that to matter? isnt the top of the memory chip just plain flat and black.... i dont believe there is anything to cross...

i mean... people put in on their cpus, i thought that was the point, and if it spills over, then yeah it will mess something up, thats y u put just enough so none spill out.

can anyone answer this... can u put as5 on a memory chip? I don't see why not, other than the risk if u screw up and it spills over, but u can always take a razor blase and use that to apply it to the memory chips.

Ok I have just been reading a few forums, and AS5 is conductive! The website states it isn't, but apperently there was a big thing a while back about AMD not replacing CPU's that had shorted out due to silver based thermal paste.

Also, the memory chips are connected by small wires under the chip, so, as long as the stuff doesnt go down the side and then under it, you should be Ok.

The AS5 site says:

Quote:
"Not Electrically Conductive: Arctic Silver 5 was formulated to conduct heat, not electricity. (While much safer than electrically conductive silver and copper greases, Arctic Silver 5 should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. While it is not electrically conductive, the compound is very slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridges two close-proximity electrical paths.)
I would play safe and get ceramique, but you may as well go ahead and apply it in a small amount. Just don't like put a whole tube on, but you probably know that anyway.

i decided not to put as5 on the memory chips anyway, because the pads are too large, but i went ahead and put it on the core, and it looks like it dropped 2C

updated scores @ 675/775 (pretty beastly overclock IMO with stock cooling , stock is 620/720, thats as high as ive tested so far, i may try farther, but i have no way to monitor temps in 3d mode, so i dont know what is safe)

3dmark05 - 11190
3dmark06 - 5546

What drivers do you guys use? i'm using catalyst 6.9

are there any special settings i should set b4 using the benchmarks.
I haven't used an ati card in a while, so im out of touch with the options.

Its capacitative. nonetheless, keep it away from the traces on your video card. I hear that putting it on the memory chips helps it, but I don't see how considering it has thermal pads already on them.
