Gaming PC for Classmate

Thread Starter
My Classmate wanted me to set up a list of PC hardware that he can use to get into PC gaming.
I made this list:

pcdeler.png

the fans is planned on beeing 2x 140 in front, 1x 140 side panel as intake & 1x 180 in top, 1x 140 back and exhaust.

Prices are terrible in Norway frown.gif

Is there anything I should change in regards to hardware or is this a solid setup? he is gonna play on a 1080p screen.

ps. read that that Graphics card will unlock the shaders by flipping the Bios switch, can any1 confirm?

Looks like a very solid setup, make sure you update the firmware on that Force GT to 1.3.3. I love mine with the new FW. smile.gif

Your GPU doesnt unlock shaders at the flick of a switch. It changes Bios so that you can use 1 bios to attempt to unlock the shaders into a 6970 (not exactly sure if it's really possible at this point of time) and if you fail or brick the card, you can flick it back to the stock Bios and get the card to work again.

Good choice on the case, it definitely has enough space to store those non modular cables.

You sure he needs Blu-Ray btw? If not, he can just get a DVD drive for much cheaper and just use the change on a CPU cooler.

Definitely upgrade to an aftermarket CPU cooler - doesn't have to be the best of the best to get a good overclock, but anything with a 120mm fan on it should allow something decent.

Also the RAM can be downgraded to the CL9 kit. Sandy Bridge shows little to no performance increase even in benchmarking for lower timings; it's all about frequency and 1600mhz CL9 is the sweet spot for price/performance. Save the $$$.

All the rest of the choices are very good and this will be a solid rig for the future, with a good upgrade path to crossfire given the CPU, motherboard and PSU can handle it. Gaming at anything up to 1080p will be flawless with maxed or near max settings.

And yeah, only get the BluRay drive if absolutely necessary. Otherwise the extra money is better spent on bigger HDD's and better CPU cooling.

Hope that helps smile.gif

Ditch the Force GT SSD, sandforce 2200 controller is crap, get a crucial m4 120gb instead. Also swap that seagate barracude for a samsung spinpoint f3.

As for unlocking the extra shaders and making the 6950 a 6970, you need to flash the cards bios' as far as i know, but there is possibility if it goes wrong you could brick the card.

cant you unlock the shaders in gpu-z anymore? read that that was the safest because the 6970 and 6950 use different timings on the memory.

he also said he wanted blue-ray, but i'll ask if he needs it.

the webpage is sold out for samsung F3's frown.gif

GPU-Z is a monitoring software... how could you unlock shaders with that? Anyway... the thing is... only if you're really lucky, you can get a card which shaders are still unlockable. If you really want to have the extra shaders for sure... get a 6970.
And like someone said an aftermarket CPU cooler, like the Hyper 212+, would be good.
Also... two questions... why would you need a 750W PSU for that setup? And does he really need an SSD?
