465 good purchase? (for the time being?)

given right now is a pretty bad time to buy a graphics card with newer models coming out and the price drop on older models do you think that a 465 for $100 I am buying locally is a smart buy? and a good deal?

If it'll unlock into a 470, then yes.

However, if it doesn't, then not so much.

Just make sure it works first before you buy it.

Only if it can unlock into GTX 470. Otherwise a bad deal.

In that price you should consider picking up a GTX 460. If possible grab GTX 460 1 GB 256-bit one.

GTX 465 locked < GTX 460 < GTX 465 that can unlock into GTX 470 = GTX 470

A locked GTX 465 should cost no more than $85 IMO, $95 if it is a good card like MSI Twin Frozr.

the guy said he never tried to unlock or overclock it is there any physical way of seeing if it will unlock or do different brands have a better chance of working?

Unlock-Able 465GTX to 470GTX is 1280mb version
post #7 of 14
The MSI Golden Editions (look like solid copper) and the PNY's the egg used to have were the most likely to unlock.

Your 6850 is just as good as that card, about.

I bought one of those $130 Galaxy 465's from new egg before they sold out thinking I was getting a steal ... it now resides in my girlfriends pc--made her a lovely little space heater.

I'd just clock that 6850 til it screams and hold out for the new cards/price drops.

Actually it unlocks the memory as well so it ships with 1024MB of memory visible to the OS, if by that you meant it has 10 RAM chips instead of 8 on its PCB and that's how you know it might unlock then ignore me.

Edit: OP, if the card only has 8 memory chips, walk away immediately. If it has 10 it's still not a guaranteed unlock so it's up to you whether you'll risk it or not.

465GTX for 85$ is very good deal but I still prefer something else like 460GTX 1gb or mid-range 5xx/6xxx card(560GTX/6870)
