Oppy upgrade?

Thread Starter
My rigs starting to show its age, and it's really starting to annoy me. Planning a conroe build, probably december time.

I've been offered a pretty cheap oppy 146 (CACJE 0546BPMW), would I notice much of a difference between that and my 3200? Will it make much of a difference for folding too? as this rig will be a 24/7 folder when I go conroe.

There will not be a huge difference with the Opteron 146 compared to your 3200+ at stock settings for both. Where the Opteron 146 will shine is its overclockability, and that is where the newer architecture shines. That being said, I would just hold off if you are looking to do a new build that close in the future.

The opteron 146 is a fantastic overclocker and has more L@ and therefore would blow your 3200 out of the water. That said, you could get a higher model conroe if you wait. I suggest you get it because even the lowest model conroes are damn fast.

On a socket 939 i would reccomend trying to find a cheapo Opty 165 on Ebay, i got one for around £110 and was abvle to O/C from 1.8 to 2.75ghz and its a dual core 1mb cache chip!

The 146 i believe is a single core so you arent really taking any step forward, if you want better performance then get more RAM or a better graphics card. Only change your chip if your going dual core i would suggest.
