Asus K8N upgrade(sokcet 754 NF3)

Thread Starter
So I have an ASUS K8N motherboard running a 32-bit 3100+ sempron. Because of the new maps on Americas Army 2.7, I decided to upgrade to the Athlon 3400+ with E3 stepping. Now that it is ordered, and shipped, I am a little nervous about the E3 stepping. Is anyone running a E3 stepping sempron or Athlon on a K8N mobo with version 1011 bios? Or any bios for that matter (sempron 64-bits are E3 stepping).

The ASUS website says that this MoBo supports all athlon 64 3400+ chips, but you all know how that can go sometimes.

Should be fine

WEll, she came in yesterday, and it worked fine @ stock.

But she does not like to overclock, not even a 217 x 12.

I had it running sandra tests, and browsing fine at 221 X 12, but as soon as I load up Americas army, i get artifacts and freeze ups. not enuff to crash the game, but enuff to be irritating. Seemed to get better at HT 3X, and when I knocked the Ram divider down to 333 the artifacts seemed to go away, but the freezes stayed.

I am going to try 209 x 12 when I get home, and I guess I will be happy with that, as long as its stable.

But what chaps my hide is my stupid lil 3100+ sempron used to run fine at 267 X 9 in the same machine.

Any1 have any ideas? or is 2.4 about the max for a socket 754 system?

What are your voltages? The thing with the 2.4GHz is that @this freq the fastest CPU for sk754 was launched, so maybe the CPU simply needs a little bit more Vcore. This type of behaviour (boot + some working benches + crash in others) usualy means that if the CPU had some more Vcore it could stabilise.
Another thing, @221FSB is it stable in stress-tools like OCCT or PRIME95 ? Click on them to download. If not, than your CPU simply isn't capable of reaching taht kind of frequency.
A thaught: I have the same mobo, but paired with a a64 2800. I saw that the best OCs are with the 1007 BIOS, but dunno if that BIOS supports your CPU. If it's a yes, give that version a go.

Highest my MoBo will go is 1.45 V, but since this is a venice core,it should be .1v over stock.

WEll was getting pissed, and kept turning my Vcore up .25 at a time, once i hit 1.6, it actually showed it at 1.536. That was enuff to let me run at 217 x 12 for 2.6 good enuff for me.

Hey mate, glad to see you're finaly managing some OCs with that rig. I have another sugestion to make: it you set 1.6V in the BIOS and in real-world you have only 1.536 Vcore something is very wrong. I think the actual limit on your OC may be where you least expected, the PSU. What is your voltage on the 12V rail in idle and under load? U can use speedfan to check them. If it's below 11.8V under load the PSU may be too weak to OC the CPU.

11.658, but that is in the ATX standard recommended tollerances. The standard is +/- 5% so 11.40-12.60. Now it even has a exception not that under peak load it is exceptable to go to 10%. they must have recently added the 10%, because it was not there 10 months ago. I read somwhere that ASUS locked the Vcore adjustment on some boards. I will check the warrenty on my E-power/Tagen puma 2 PSU and see if o can get it replaced.

On a future note, I think I ma going to stick with botom tier Semprons from now on. My old chip described in my avatar was almost as good as this, and alot more fun, lol.
