Getting ready to buy the M4

Thread Starter
So I was getting ready to add an M4 to my cart, when I noticed there are a few different 128gb M4 models on newegg. Anyone know what these are? I see the speeds are a bit better, but the drives are cheaper, both on their current and "was" price. Generally I would still just buy the one with the ratings, but I was thinking maybe they put out a new model that doesn't have the ~5000hr bug.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100011689%20600038478&IsNodeId=1&Description=crucial%20m4&name=128GB&Order=BESTMATCH

Also, would neweggs warranty be any good for this? Is Crucial pretty good about handling drive failures and such? I only ask because I was seriously 1 click away from buying a Vertex 3 when I decided I had better check here first.

Well one of them has a transfer kit included. Thats to transfer your entire c drive I believe to the SSD before installing it that way when you do install it and plug it in, it is ready to go with your whole drive information on it. I have a crucial M4 128gb and dude I love it. I had transfer speeds of 370MBps with firmware update 002 and I flashed it to 009 and boosted speeds to 450MBps or better. I seriously am going to get another when I have the funds available for Raid 0. My WEI score for the SSD is 7.9 and it screams. Not sure about crucials customer support but Im sure it is pretty good as they are a well known and successful company. Enjoy your new drive!

Sorry, don't mean to steal thread, but dstoler you said your m4 gets 7.9 on WEI, mine only gets 5.9.
Is there a way you can test to check if your system is using the ssd as the primary hard drive, or if it is using my old HDD because it was the same WEI as my hdd?

Sounds like your running in IDE mode.

Hey man. Ok do you have your windows installed on top of your M4? sounds like it is not because that score is def from a HDD with slow spinning platters. What you need to do is back up your files and then do an install of windows 7 (or whatever you got) onto the solid state drive. should be your C:/ drive. Also install applications and programs on your SSD to speed load times up. I will find you a solid state drive optimization guide so that you may tweak it for better performance. PM me if you ahve any issues, I practically live on OCN so I will get that faster then just a reply here. Good luck man

Edit: also its best that before you install windows on the ssd go into the bios and change it to ahci mode as opposed to ide mode. (some say it helps and some say it does nothing but i recommend it) if you do not install it when it is in ide mode you have to go into the registry and change it there.

Thanks for the replies, i have fresh installed win 7 onto it, and it is in AHCI mode. I will run AS ssd now and give you the results, i seem to be getting low 4K write results, about 3.0 mb/s, doesn't seem normal.

EDIT: SUCCESS. Thanks for your help dstoler and equilzer, turns out i only had sata ports 0-3 as AHCI and 4-6 were IDE...i had my SSD plugged into port 4. Simple replug of sata cables and my 4K write speed is back up to 48 mb/s. Also, my WEI is now 7.9. Cheers guys, +rep!

I have a Crucial M4 as my boot drive and a HDD as d-drive with Windows 7 still installed. I get a WEI of 5.9 for disk transfer rate unless I disconnect the HD, then it goes to 7.9.
