Is BF3 really that much of a VRAM hog or does it just cache what you have? - Page 4

Differed MSAA is the VRAM hog I'm finding. Without it, the game has pretty normal usage and I don't think there is a leak given the evidence.

Each person is different, obviously. But I really don't see a difference with it on, other then the massive performance hit of course.

While starting a map im at around 50% ram usage with the game and my programs open. At the end of the round im at 85% ram. I looked in the resource monitor and it says that DWM.exe uses up a lot. Thats the aero desktop using that up, because when I switch to the basic theme for windows the ram usage goes back down. Memory leak in windows caused by the game methinks.

For whatever reason, Frostbite 2.0 decides it's gonna render stuff behind you that you're not looking at. That's why like I'll stutter in Rush halfway through the second MCOM, and large conquest stutters when I hope in a vehicle and to a point. Mind you this only happens when textures are set to ultra.

Fb2 doesn't render some things - players for instance. Have your friend stand behind you and flick your mouse around 180. You will see him pop into existence. So annoying once you see it.

Well I tried lowering my AA to 2X and it stabilized the game completely. No more weird lag spikes. Very consistent. Kinda pisses me off that the rig I built specifically for this game has issues maxing it, even being a ram issue. I guess that's what I get for building a PC before the game I want to play is out though.

It's really simple if you ask me. To run this game "maxed out" you need a 2GB GPU.

What are you talking about? A 5770 has 1gb of vram....and my point was that and older 800SP card is not enough for this game. The GPU just doesn't have enough raw power so it's not really a vram issue in your case.

I ran 570 2560mb sli and 580 3gb classified sli and both smashed this game with ease...Dual 580's 1.5 or 3gb will keep you WELL above 60 fps @ 1200p and below. thumb.gif

VRAM scale as the game goes. It's not like you will hit a wall. It will uses whatever you have up to the point. If you have more available, sure let's eat them all. Games are just greedy on VRAM in another word.

Maybe it's a "technique" to reserve that VRAM so that it is more optimized and available immediately that way? Otherwise if that VRAM is being used by something else it has to "stop what it's doing" to then work on the game.
