Help with an APU based build.

So basically I'm selling my Sig Rig because I just don't really game anymore, but I still want to have fun building something. I'll need everything except for a HDD as I'll be keeping the SSD I have currently. I'd say my budget would be under $450. I know it's possible to get something decent for what I want to do. No GPU will be needed for now. I was thinking I should make it an ITX build since I want it small and quiet as well. SILENCE IS KEY IN THIS BUILD. I'll post something up of what I had in mind in a few minutes.

Thanks for your time smile.gif

In my experience mini itx power supplies are not quite. The one's that come with the cases anyways.

Built my grandparents a mini itx last year. I wanted to try out a tiny build myself. Although I was happy with the build it was louder than I would have liked

Also a micro atx would have been a little cheaper

I was actually thinking of using a Pico since it would be pretty low power.

I think it looks pretty good. That case is supposed to be good! I had to use a cheap one in my grandparents

You should do a build log!

There is a slightly better online memory deal available on Newegg (a shell shocker) that you might want to take advantage of.

I would like to argue against spending more than $100 for the case and PSU on an A8 APU based build.  The A8 is so efficient that you could run it on a 150W-200W PSU like the ones used in prebuilts (don't use a very old/used one of course!).  There are small form factor cases in the $40 range that are more than adequate to handle the A8 APU.  Some even with PSUs adequate to handle the A8 APU and an extra low profile Radeon 6670 in Hybrid CrossfireX later.

A 150W PicoPSU (with an adequately sized power brick) should be enough to supply the power you need for this PC.  Although I would advise that you undervolt considering with motherboard components you would be very close to 150W power consumption with other components, assuming (this may not be) the 100W TDP value correctly describes APU power consumption (but A8 APUs are very good at undervolting as well).

Well the reason I chose the case was the feature of using a full size PSU and not really having to worry about a GFX card being too big (and I like the way it looks smile.gif), I plan on running a mid-range 6xxx to CF with the APU later when the prices fall after the 7-series is released.

just rem that amd recommends only these 3 discrete gpu's with the a6 or a8 series apu's:
Recommended AMD Radeon™ Discrete Graphics 6450, 6570 & 6670..... its also on the side of the apu box... i know cause i have one...

with any1 of those gpu's u can cf with the onboard gpu maxing out @ 880 cores using a 6670 thus giving u a AMD Radeon HD 6690D2.
also those 3 diff series of gpus are only runnin a 128bit memory interace.. so you can boost visual performance up to 123% when combining 6670 graphics card...

cf'ing with 2 discrete cards, you wont be able to take advantage of the onboard apu gfx features.... remember the apu was designed for low/mid-range gaming at best...

Thank you for that, I do not plan on anything hardcore, just some source games. (CS:S, TF2, Portal, etc. smile.gif)
