Strange Noise Under Load with Overclock?

Thread Starter
Evening OCN.

I've recently tried to overclock my Core i5-750 to reduce the bottleneck between my new 6770/5770 Crossfire setup. Despite trying the various guides to overclock that are out there, I seem to run into some problem that varies from unsettling to critical. In guides, I'll enter the settings, and get a BSOD with varying STOP codes, and in others, with lower frequencies, I'll get a weird noise when my processor is under full load. It's sort of like a whine, but not quite (sorry for the lack of description). I reduced the BCLK from where I had it at 170 to 160 and still had a whine, and to make sure I hadn't damaged my CPU, I reduced it back down to 130, which is slightly below stock speeds, and I found the whine to be gone. I'm running Prime95 as I type this to check for stability.

My MOBO, CPU, and other specs are in my signature (minus the Crossfire setup- I recently got the 6770 for the holidays). Can anyone give me any insight as to what I'm doing wrong? At stock speeds, my CPU temp is sitting at mid-twenties, so I know it isn't a temperature issue. I also disabled all of the Eco-Options such as SpeedStep, C1E, C-State, etc, along with Turboboost.
Any insight is very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

PSU struggling by the sounds of it.

Having the cpu overclocked must be just tipping the scale.

Make sure the whine is coming from the psu and if it is get that thing outta there quick before it takes your board or something with it.

could be squealing caps. I've seen this in PSU's, motherboards and video cards.

Its called fans.. No but in all seriousness open the case up and try find exactly where its coming from if its the PSU like these guys think then you might be able to get it replaced under warrenty if its not to old.

If it's the PSU, do you think my PSU should be a bit beefier if I have all these components in my rig? As aforementioned, specs are in my signature.

The gpu will put out a high pitched whine because of the throttling of a stress test. If its coming from that then your fine but I would check the psu just in case.

I just ran a GPU stress test and it made a whining noise too, but I'm not sure if it was the same one. It seems to me like it is, but I'd like to check to make sure.

If you do have two different whines and one is coming from the gpu and the other is possibly coming from the psu then it's probably a lack of power for the computer. If you're running two gpu's and an overclock on both the cpu and gpu's then its probably running the psu too close to the max power output. I would recommend getting a 650w psu at least for running an overclock and sli only because I don't like to use more than 80% of my psu's power. Certain psu's work best at a specific power output level and the optimal power output lets the psu put out stable voltages at a cool temperature which helps the cpu and psu in the long run. Your psu is working fine but I think you're drawing too much from it with all that you're running. Just my 2 cents smile.gif

I could be coming from your motherboard chokes or capacitors. My one does when stressing cpu sounds like a hiss
