Computer bought only 2 days ago is acting up. Graphic-wise. *Solved.... sort of...*

My laptop is P2532N. It has i7 2670QM, 8GB RAM, GT550M 2G, Win7 64bit&32bit. I am using 64bit at the time.
I downloaded a software by nvidia. I don't remember the real name, but it was something like 'nvidia tools'. Anyway, with that update, I could overclock my GPU from within the nvidia control panel. Since I know NOTHING about overclocking, I increased it just a little bit. Graphics clock : from 740 to 900. I didn't touch the memory clock. And the processor clock was not accessible, and it changed automatically when I touched the graphics clock. Anyhoo, it was all good. No blue screens. However, when I turned on Alice madness returns, (Resolution 1280*720) The screen was flickering... sort of... There isn't a good way to describe this... There were thick black lines which were sometimes like a triangle... Simply put, it was worse than the normal, factory mode. The screen was crashing...
Well, I am trying(sort of...) to quit gaming, so not being able to overclock is not that bad. However, it seems like the graphic card is acting a bit strange since I overclocked it, then restored it to the original settings. The game screen takes a long time to pop up. Sometimes, I hear the sound of the ads when the game is started for the first time(ie : -music- EA GAMES~~~), but don't actually see the ads. And when I turn the game off, it takes about 15 seconds and several alt+taps to see the wallpaper.

So.... Simply put(again...),
1. I overclocked it only a little bit(didn't touch the memory clock. Maybe that is the problem?), but it didn't work. WHY?
2. I restored it to normal, but the graphic card seems to be acting a bit strange. Did I **** up the GPU?

P.S. 1900:600, ALL LOW settings on BF3 with this laptop, and I only get 25 frames. Shouldn't my laptop get a nice frame rate even if I had set it to ALL MEDIUM? Did I get a bad laptop from the start?

First of all... Please fill out your system specs so that your rig specs show up on the bottom of every post you make. See the bottom of my post? That is my rig specs.
Secondly... 740 to 900 in your memory clock is not an increase of a little bit; that is HUGE! Return it to stock! See my system specs? My "stock" memory clock is 797. An increase to 870 is barely stable at the voltage I'm running.
Could you please post a link to your laptop so that I can take a look at it? I don't know much about laptop graphics cards, but my suspicion is (from the laptops I've used except Alienware rigs) that the internal graphics of your machine is simply not up to the task.

EDIT: Here, check this out. Now compare those benchmarks with desktop graphics that are available. I think you'll find - but I could be wrong - that the GPU in your laptop is pretty "middle-of-the-road".

EDIT 2: Here's another one; not a great graphics adapter. Ranks 122nd on the list.

By way of comparison, the "worst" GPU I own is a GTS 450 which ranks 56th on this list. I wouldn't try playing BF3 on anything but "low" with that card.
Sorry...

740 -> 900mhz (%22 overclock) is a large overclock. I would highly suggest doing some research before tinkering with stuff like this.

What you are experiencing is artifacting as a result of an unstable overclock. Reset everything back to stock settings and leave it alone. Please remember that "a little bit" is relative to the situation.

A GT550m is far from a recommended video card for BF3. Be prepared to spend several grand on a laptop capable of playing BF3 properly.

Generally laptops aren't made for overclocking, since cooling is usually an issue. It could be the reason you are having problems. Also, from what I hear, BF3 is handing people their butts on a regular basis, so performance on a laptop, even a high end one, might get bogged down.

Yes, I would have to agree that mobile gpus' are not even close to there desktop counterparts I would say a mobile 550 is equal to a 260gtx desktop card. Also you have to take into count that most pc game engines don't run well on mobile gpu's they are not designed for that chipset. I'm pretty sure most games have that on the system requirements in small print.

I tried sending you a PM, but I don't think it worked.

Thanks for the reply. But I have one more question then.
I only overclocked it for 2minutes maximum. Did I make my GPU bad? Would I have to go get an A/S?

I would be very surprised if you roasted your graphics card.

A desktop will always be faster and have the capability to upgrade for future performace gains. With the amount of money you invested in that laptop you could have had an amazing desktop capable of playing BF3 at 60fps with ultra settings. On the hand you can't take the desktop on the road or to the local coffee shop to game biggrin.gif
