13" with highest resolution ultra-portable

What is your maximum budget?
under $1000

What country are you in?
USA

What will be the uses of this laptop?

  • Taking notes/exams during class (exams and classes are three hours each)
  • Writing 40 page appellate briefs while studying dozens of sources on Westlaw
  • Extended periods of unplugged study sessions
  • Gaming/watching HD movies when out of town

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
No.

What screen size do you require?
11.6"-14"

What screen resolution do you require?
Higher than 1366x768 if possible.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
New

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet):
Six hours minimum.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?:
Skyrim, L4D2, Diablo III. No integrated gfx please!

What operating system do you need? (if any):
Windows 7

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Sleek, business-like, compact.

How much hard drive space do you need?:
Doesnt matter. I prefer a faster spinning HD.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.):
No.

Is there anything else we need to know?

My price range is so wide because I do not know if I want to get an ultra-portable or just a high-powered netbook. The DM1z seems to fit the bill(small, powerful enough, good battery life, sleek, cheap), but the screen is so small. I have a desktop but my laptop is my dedicated law school computer, and I work with many, many different documents at the same time, most of the time there are over a dozen .docs open with about 10-12 cases as well in google chrome. This is why I prioritize screen size/resolution.

Ignore price range then I guess. Otherwise I am stuck with some 1366x768. I did some more poking around, looks like 1366x768 is pretty much the only res available frown.gif

If I had to increase screen size, what is the smallest available with the highest resolution?

Edit: Lenovo T420 14.1" with 1600x900. This may be usable. Out of the price range.

Check the laptop in my sig rig, should fit the bill, and have more than enough power for anything you throw at it (at least mine does smile.gif). I would get the newer model (3830 vs my 3820), it has a faster CPU and GPU.

I have been looking very hard at the 3830, very strong computing power, but the quality of the TN panel has been strongly criticized and its that damned 1366 res.

I just built the T420 I want online with the 1600x900, 2.5ghz i5 processor and nvidia 4200m, 9 cell battery: $1700.. Jeeeeezus. Update, with coupon, $1480.

I already looked at that and it's only got Intel HD 3000 and the screen is actually 1280x800.
