[N4G] Are Video Games becoming too Expensive? - Page 3

all these people who say video games are becoming too expensive obviously never bought a video game 10 years ago. i paid 100 aud for 007: the world is not enough when it came out in 1999 (can't remember exactly when) for the n64.

It's true ~$60 does seem expensive but I think it's funny how quickly PC gaming prices fall. Granted part of that is based on the quality of the game, but there are still some very highly rated games that can be found for %50 (or more) off within 3 months of launch. Example: Batman: Arkham City launched for the PC at $49.99 on Nov 21st, and was featured during the Steam Holiday Sale for $24.99.

Lot of AAA games are just not worth the 60$. If it only takes 7hrs to beat a game, its not worth it IMO. I rather spent 60$ on an A or AA title that i can put 25+ hrs to beat than a AAA title that only takes 7hrs to finish.

Ah, the bi-annual article whining about game prices.

Anyone whining about game prices hasn't been gaming very long.

Price I paid for Atari games in 1986 = $50
Price I paid for NES games in 1988 = $50
Price I paid for SNES games in 1992 = $50
Price I paid for N64/PS1 games in 1998 = $50
Price I paid for PS2/XBOX games in 2002 = $50
Price I pay for PS3/XBox360 games now = $60

Now, go adjust each of these prices for inflation and you'll find that prices of video games have dropped almost every year for the last 25 years. Making games is a business, and saying they're too expensive just because SOME companies make decent profits even while prices are dropping is stupid.

I think they are, $60 is quite an amount to pay for a game. $20 or $30 I would be fine with.

So no, I think video games have gotten cheaper.

Compare the prices of last gen games to the prices of current gen games at around this time and you will see that the price is actually going up.

No guys.. forget that.. You know it is getting bad when they start selling freaking MMO's for 60 dollars a pop. Give me a damn break for real, SWTOR... I love that game, but honestly at max GFX it looks like crap to me and is visually not as rewarding as say RIFT is. I just think its a sign that devs are getting rather "greedy" when they half-ass something and have the nerve to make us pay 60+ dollars on it. DLC is not all that bad really, say if you consider games like "Dungeon Defenders" and other indie games, I think its kinda worth it... but, they do in the end suck punch us in the face with micro-transactions.. frown.gif You can make a 15 dollar game hit 50 dollars easy, over time. But hey, without us gaming industry would die.

They definitively are too expensive and this coming from someone who spent close to 200$ during the last two steam sales. I bought so many games for 2.50$ - 10$, and so did lots of other people going from what games were popular in the steam sales.

These companies are just greedy. There are lots of people who game on consoles who simply buy games based off hype. Games like GTA and Call of Duty generate lots of hype so they can price them high and never let them go on sale. Look at how much Black Ops is now, its a year old and its 39.99, until a couple months ago it was still being sold at full price.

Really there are only a couple of franchises that I still would buy at release when it comes to consoles. I stopped caring about series's like Halo and Gears of War because they've just turned into cash cows.

Really as kids having your parents buy the most popular console games you don't understand just how much 60 - 70$ is. Some of my text books for university aren't even that much. In some parts of the world people don't even make that much in a month let alone making room for gaming alongside things like rent, food and gas.
