Looking for opinions on new $100-$150 headphones

Hi folks! My sister is going to the States, so I thought I'd ask her to buy me a set of cans, since good headphones are ridiculously overpriced and really hard to come by here in Brazil.

That's why I need your help. I'm looking for something to listen to music (electronica, many kinds of rock, metal, some classical music even) and to play games. My price range is from a 100 bucks to 150, though it could be pushed a little more if there is something really spectacular for the extra money. I thought about the ATH-AD700's, but I heard they lack on the bass, though I'm not sure how I feel about that since I haven't ever really heard any decent quality headphones before to make a comparison, which means I'd need some enlightening on that matter.

Thanks in advance for any input! thumb.gif

What kind of sound signature are you looking for in a headphone. That will help people with making suggestions for you. But since you mention Electronic music besides the other music you listed. That will give people some idea on what to suggest to you. But in the end you will have to make it, as no one can really tell you what you will like.

Even tho I have used my AD700 with electronic music. They don't do that well with it as they have almost no bass. Sure you could EQ in bass, but it no point. Might as well get a set of headphones that have bass if your gonna EQ it in. Tho if you had a sound card or external dac or amp with a op-amp socket, you could install a op-amp which does have a bass improving sound signature which I have used with the AD700 when I had a Auzentech prelude which did do it. But you most likely don't.

The AD700 does good for classical music. But not for any thing where bass is the purpose of the music like Drum n Bass,Dub step and so forth, as it doesn't have hardy any bass. For those to sound good. Unless you prefer the sound signature of bass-lite but. It does make up for it with a big huge sound stage. The Closed model A700 would have more bass then the AD700 model but at the cost of less sound stage. Also some people ears get hurt with the AD700s ear pads on even if their velour and open back.

I had a Ultrasone HFI-780 after the AD700, they work wonders for electronic music, I don't remember if I listen to classical music with them, but I know I have with the AD700s. HFI-780 sound stage is smaller then the AD700's, I used both for gaming and both did a good job in games. AD700s having nearly no bass is the main difference. Most people around here says it good for hearing footsteps,

The problem with that is. I can hear the same footsteps very good on Ultrasone HFI-780 as the person that tried to sneak up behind me in a game tried to do but found out the hard way. Why he couldn't. Just like I can on these DT880.

A friend of mine bought the AKG 240MKII's which he does use for all the same music that your listening to and he enjoys them thru his Audio-track cube usb dac amp. He used them for gaming too, but its his first audiophile grade setup he had. I haven't Heard the AKG 240MK II my self so I cant give suggestions on them. Other then the friend that I mention that's enjoying them for his first good headphones.

DT880 is a very good choice for what you want too, but since you are prolixly using on-board audio then the 32ohm model is what you would want. But unless you find a good sell on them. they will be over your budget.

The best thing you can do find some where local around you and go have a listen at headphones with your music with you. Then when you find one you like. Then have her pick it up for you. Also your gonna want headphones that easy to drive off on-board audio if that's what your using.

Most Ultrasone Headphones are easy to be driven, AD700 and the HFI-780 are easy to drive.. Some 32-80ohm headphones are, but then there's a bunch of 32-80ohm that need a headphone amp to be driven. Also even tho AD700s and HFI-780s can be use with on-board audio, they work best with a better source like a sound card. If you want them to sound really good. The HFI-780s do benefit from being amp-ed, where its bass is improved.

Just had to laugh at the huge difference in the quality of post number 2 compared to number 3, rofl. Anyway, on topic:

Is it possible for you to get a sound card, or even a decent DAC/amp like something out of the Fiio range? Onboard sound just doesn't do good headphones justice!

I'd definitely recommend a pair of Ultrasone's for contemporary music as well as gaming. Ultrasone Pro 550, HFI-580 or HFI-780 are all around that price range AFAIK. I haven't personally heard the HFI-580/780 but I did very much like the Pro 550's.

Audio Technica ATH-M50's and Shure SRH-840's are also a couple of alternatives. Both of these are generally considered a little more neutral than Ultrasone's from what I can gather (Ultrasone's tend to have a U shaped frequency response - emphasized bass and treble with recessed mids. Different Ultrasone models tend to have this sound signature to varying degrees).

Go read up some reviews and comparisons of these headphones if you want to learn a little bit more about them, but I personally would recommend the Ultrasone Pro 550's. I also listen to a LOT of different genres and I personally own the Pro 750's, which I love. I liked the 550's quite a bit too.

Also, admflameberg, that was a good post. Long and well written. +rep

I do intend to get a nice sound card eventually. I'm very aware of the huge gap between a good sound card and onboard sound. In fact, I would still be using a sound card, albeit an ancient one (the Sound Blaster Audigy 2) if only Creative's drivers would work as they should.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions, people. I'll look those models up. Keep the suggestions coming! wink.gif

As others have said, you should definitely get the Ultrasone Pro 550s. Good for gaming. Great for electronica. 150 dollars. The 580s aren't even an option anymore since they're now more expensive than the 550s? (lolwut?)

If you're actually not a gamer, the AT M50s might actually be a decent recommendation... Good bass, excellent build quality. Average SQ, but definitely more neutral than the Ultrasone.

I assume you're on OCN because you're cool though.

But if you spam BR? BR? HuE HuE HuE in games, then I suggest you get a Creative Fatal1ty headset.

It's saddening, although not completely without reason (I would know), that this is how we Brazilians are portrayed by foreigners. No, don't worry, I'm not one of those spammers thumb.gif

OT, though, The Ultrasone 550's sure look interesting. I'm really thinking about getting them.

Does anybody have any objection against the Ultrasone Pro 550's? Something better within the same budget, perhaps?
