Should I Upgrade My CPU Cooler? (i7 960)

Thread Starter
Hey OCN,

I recently bought my cpu/ram/mobo off OCN and the included H40 with Dual Sunon fans is having trouble cooling my i7 960 without windmill noise levels.

515

At my current OC (4.1GHz HT on) my temps are right at Intel's specified max temps for the 960 (67.9C). So i'm looking for a cooler that will drop those by about 10C and be quieter at the same time. (or allow me to clock my chip to 4.3-4.5GHz wink.gif )

I would get the H100 but my case isn't dual-rad friendly so right now i'm looking at:

1: the H80 ($90+tax with 2 fans) or

2: the NH-D14 (also $100+tax with 2 fans)

500

The way my board's laid out it looks like i won't have any ram clearance issues as long as i don't put a third fan on it.

So what do you guys think. Will i see a big improvement by laying down the cash? and which cooler would you get?

Thanks.

What are you measuring for temps? Intel specifies a TDP, but they mean the temp sensor in the center of the ihs (integrated heat spreader -- the copper cpu cover). You are measuring core temps. The ihs temp will be less, so you're not running at Intel's specified max.

That said, the H100 matches the high-end air coolers only when it gets loud. Save yourself $25 and get a Silver Arrow.

And if you need RAM, get low profile RAM. G.Skill makes nice low profile RAM. I quit buying Ripjaws and switched to their low profile. With Vdimm's of 1.5v, you hardly need a RAM heatsink, much less a high one.
