Going away to University. Laptop for school work/SW: The Old Republic and beyond?

Hey,

Headed to away from home to university for the first time. I'd like to purchase a laptop that I can both do school work on and play The Old Republic, as well as some of the newer games of this generation and older. (i.e. Source games, Battlefield 3, etc.)

I'm broke as a joke, so I'd rather not play a ton. I'd be content with running TOR smoothly on Med/High settings. This would probably translate to Battlefield 3 on lower settings, but whatever. You get my meaning.

I'd really like to spend $500 or less. I may be able to scrounge up $600-$700, but it would be far less likely and I'd have to stop eating for awhile. I'm probably looking at a used purchase off here, Ebay, Amazon, or Eastern CT's Craigslist.

My friend Jeremy recommended me to you guys. If I end up purchasing through you, I know the deal. I'm also a member of Cheap Ass Gamer and I believe they trade/buy/sell in a similar manner.

Thank you.

P.S. I'm new to mobile gaming. I usually just build my own rig. On that note, I'd prefer an Nvidia driven GPU but would be willing to try ATI again in good faith.

$500 you'll be stuck with integrated graphics probably, at which point BF3 really isn't worth it.

Yeah, I mean, maybe that's a stretch. It's mostly for mobile TOR. I still have a nice desktop rig I use for my primary gaming.

Saw someone else post this Asus K53ta a few days ago, costs $410. 15", AMD A6-3400M quad, 6650M discrete graphics (crossfired with the integrated). http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230216&Tpk=k53ta

If you want a 14", not too many options except i3 and HD 3000 graphics. Those can do Source and similar games easily, no clue on TOR.

edit found these benchmarks. They can be roughly compared to mobile - 6650M is is pretty much tied to a desktop 5570. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/star-wars-gaming-tests-review,3087-4.html

(judging of the SP count and core clockspeed between the 2).

This will play bf3. You could get a a6 instead for $60 less.

Seems like a pretty weak processor. You saw someone posting that for TOR, or as a nice, economic laptop in general?

If that can play BF3, I'm sure it can play TOR/my older games. I think we may have a winner! Pretty low processor speeds, but I'm also not used to shopping for AMD.

Check the edit. Also the A6 is a quad-core. Turbos to 2.3 single, 1.6 quad, ~2ghz dual. It's really not that slow. At your budget, you're either getting an i3 which games a lot worse, or an A6, or something from a couple generations ago with terrible battery life (maybe GTS 250M).

I'm guessing you don't realize this, but the 6650M is faster than the 6620G integrated with the A8. Crossfiring adds some extra speed.

Thanks for the clarification. Looks like I do need some AMD education. The laptop you linked was refurbished and is sold out. What do you make of Strict's suggestion? I was looking at the one he said would run Battlefield 3. Is that in the same league? It's pretty low in price.

Oh, just read that last bit. Hm.

The Asus jrbroad77 posted is probably the best deal you'll find, plus some guys have been able to get good overclocks on the Amd A processors.

edit: Here it is on Amazon, a little more expensive then newegg, but still under $500.
