Reinstalling XP or Windows 7 on a SLOW laptop

Hey all,

My girlfriend's mom has an hp pavillion dv6500... Don't even look it up. It sucks.

It currently has windows vista (oh god) and enough bloatware to bring the thing to a screeching halt. I believe the hard drive is the worst part. While backing up 16GB of music, the drive started in the B/s and after 20 minutes is up to merely 10MB/s. ***. I guess it is largely in part to the bloatware on this thing.

So the specs of the laptop are as follows

1.5 GHz Core 2 Duo
1 GB RAM
Intel GMA Graphics

She uses the laptop for windows movie maker, picasa, and itunes mostly. Internet tasks are also up there.

XP? Or W7?

ANOTHER NOTE: There are no Windows 7 drivers for this laptop (at least not on HP's site), however I believe the Vista Drivers should work just fine.

Windows 7 should be fine and will run a lot smoother without all the bloatware.

On a similar note hard drive speed will impact the responsiveness of the system. As you should probably already know.

If its possible to upgrade the HDD and RAM i strongly suggest so.

Most vista drivers will work on 7, but fortunately win7 tends to use generic drivers for devices it doesn't completely recognize.

A single 2GB module of DDR should be dirt cheap (even better if its older DDR2)

and older IDE HDD (which i assume it is: by this i mean finding a new IDE Hard drive) might be a little harder to come by. but it will be worth it in the end.

good luck thumb.gif

Went with win7, and it looks like all the drivers i needed were installed using windows update. So far it looks good, but i'll keep an eye on it.

Definitely going to get her some RAM and a new hard drive lol. After the install the hard drive peaks at 13MB/s on writes! thumb.gif

Vista drivers actually play nice with Windows 7. Tried it early in 2009 when Windows 7 was already out. In fact MS tech support recommended it. So I personally do not see problems there.
