Which way does the fan go?

K a totally novice question here, but it's for my friend and I can't give him an answer with completely certainty. He has a Phenom 955, and just bought a hyper 212 evo, and he's saying his temps are pretty damn high. 65C playing CoD Blops at stock(3.2ghz). Mind you, he just put this HSF on today, so I'm not sure if he waits a few days and lets it cure that he'll see more normal temps, but the question came up of which way HSF is supposed to be facing. He says he has it this way

http://media.photobucket.com/image/recent/gedz89/PC/IMG_2062.jpg

Is that correct? Or is this the source of his high tempearture problem?

Or would this've been the correct way?

http://thebestcasescenario.com/oneslowz28/personal/cablemanagement/insidebottom.jpg

With this way, the fan blades would be facing in, so they'd blow the hot air thru the HSF, and out to his back fans which would push it out of the back of his case. Would this way yield better performance? Or is the first way fine and it's just a matter of waiting?(Note: that first picture isn't his system, he doesn't have any top fans, and has a top mounted PSU)

He should attempt to get the air to exhaust out. So have the fan blow through the Heatsink and out an exhaust fan. Also, is he sure he put the TIM on correctly?

Remount the HSF. picture one is right (especially if there's no top ventilation)

Lol two conflicting answers 0_o.

@ Spirit Gear, so you say since he has no top ventilation(only top mounted psu) that picture one is correct? Is that because the air would blow thru the HSF upwards and get outputted by the PSUs fan? And if that's the case, why are his temps so horrid? He has two 90mm back fans, and one 120mm front fan.
I did mine with a standard verticle mount so the air is pushed through to the chassis exhaust fan in the back. I've seen people do horizontal mounts with the hyper 212 but it would seem to me that adds stress on the fan bearings, your taking air off the GPU (hot) and if you don't have top mount exhaust fans there's nothing drawing the hot air out.

Second pic is the proper way to mount u will get the best temps that way!

Test temps with the side panel off. If temps don't improve meaningfully, most likely it is a bad HSF mount.

I should also say when mounting the Hyper 212 you should screw in the mount in an X tightening them evenly so the HSF is fully against the heat shield. Might have use too much or too little TIM as well. Remount the cooler vertical and see if the temps get better.

Alright thanks for all the input all, he said he'll remount vertically. Also the way he put on the TIM before, he said he spread it evenly, is this known to be less effective than the peasize dot and letting the HSF being pressed down let it spread evenly?
It can go either direction on an AMD system, but odds are is the poor results are from improper TIM application or poor airflow into the heat sink or from the case after going through the heat sink

But for applying TIM:
