Looking for a College Backpack

Thread Starter
I'm looking around for a backpack that I can use in college. My current one, an Eastsport Basic Tech has lasted me for a couple of years, but is beginning to show it's age. Unfortunately, all of the models that I used to love for light backpacking (cross-country hiker, here) have been discontinued. frown.gif

My requirements are:

-Has to hold a 14.1" laptop (15.6" would be nice).
-Needs to be able to carry a couple textbooks (up to 3-4" thick) and spiral notebooks.
-Extra pouches for pens/pencils/erasers, cables, and 2 calculators (TI-84 and a TI-30X IIS).
-A side mesh pouch for a water bottle would be awesome.

I saw this, but it's a good bit expensive and I don't know how it would hold up. Any suggestions are welcome!

I highly recommend this. I plan on getting one even though I will most likely never use it and just hang it in my room.

Hold tons, come in different colors/camo's.

Expensive for everyday stuff but you'll likely never need a new one.... Ever.

I use this North Face backpack here:

http://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/recon_3.html

It may be 90$ but its 90$ well spent. Super comfortable and durable. had this for about 3 years now and still looks good. will hold your laptop securely as well. its good!

If you are going to get an The North Face backpack, I recommend the Hot Shot. I owned one for one month before giving it to my little brother but it was a great backpack. It had lots of room, I could easily fit 5 textbooks in my book bag but it made me look like a geek so I stopped using it. However I still HIGHLY recommend you buying the messenger bag I linked you in my other post. Stay classy.

Chrome mini metro?

MiniHero_BlackRed_Enlarge_1_1.jpg

Made in the US, lifetime warranty, and it has a waterproof compartment. The mini model is quite big, I was able to fit a dell mini tower and 3 mechanical keyboards during the time that my local hs was clearing out old comps - and the front has tons of pockets, big enough to fit a standard sized mouse. Chrome itself is definitely a brand for backpack enthusiasts. thumb.gif

Although I really like the look, everyone at my school has one of those backpacks. Maybe that's a testament to how good they are, but then again, everyone has a set of Dr. Dre headphones...

I'll look into them.

I am seriously considering the North Face Surge. I am perfectly willing to pay up for a nice backpack. I always treat them with care, so they last me for a long time.

I'm going by a few North Face resellers, so hopefully they have some backpacks I can try out.

I love messenger bags, but they aren't up to the task of what I need. My friend has a Crumpler, and it's nice. But I can't imagine carrying it around all day long with the amount of stuff he has in it.

So far, the North Face Surge is the one that appeals the most to me. I'll have to go try on some packs soon, because my brother's Swiss backpack weighs a ton on its own. My back started hurting after 5 minutes of holding it today.

+REP to all who gave suggestions!

You may think my recommendation is a little less than what you want, but I am very pleased with the price and warranty. I ordered two High Sierra Fat Boy backpacks from Amazon for me and my wife for college. Here is what I bought.http://www.amazon.com/High-Sierra-Fat-Backpack-Black/dp/B00439GTNG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326211585&sr=8-1
It has a lifetime warranty and inexpensive. It is not waterproof though and that may be an issue for you. It holds my wife's 16 inch laptop and books with no problem and has plenty of pockets and extra area's for the all the little stuff. I have a 17 inch laptop and though a little tight, has no problem either even with all my stuff.
If you want an inexpensive backpack, the High Sierra Fat Boy will treat you well. I am pleased.
