Is a fan controller with water cooling worth it.

Thread Starter
I am building a new rig (parts in on tuesday) and trying to decide if there is a need for a fan controller.

Rig is.....

CoolerMaster Case HAF X ATX FULL TOWER most likely modded to get the rad in Sabertooth x79 board i7 3930k OC'd to HOPEFULLY 4.7ish 2x120G Vertex 3 SSD's RAID for boot/aps 1TB WD 7200rm storage 32G Crucial Ballistix RAM Radeon HD 7970 3Gb GPU XSPC RASA 750 RS360 Water Cooling Kit

Listed as a proposed rig on my profile.

The sabertooth has just enough fan plugs to support the fans (3 on the rad, 3 in the box) but wondering if anyone has experience with whether or not it would be worth the 50ish bucks to add a fan controller.

Contemplating this one..... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811992004

Thanks

I'd say no personally, it's not like you've modded with a million fans in mind. 3 fans in the case would be more than enough for the rest of your components and there's really no need to use a 50$ component to control 3 more than likely inaudible fans.

For anything under 4 fans, a controller is mostly unneeded. Also, any fan controller that expensive is not truly worth. You could find cheaper models which perform pretty good.

if you want the fan controller simply for aesthetic reasons, then sure why not. but like redsunx said, there is no practical reason for the controller.

That's what I figured. It would look great, not that I care that much about aesthetics, I was just curious is there would be any performance difference. i.e. fans run faster etc.... I have no experience with a controller.

Thanks guys!biggrin.gif

I use one because I can control how loud I want the fans at any one point in time and you load them up with a LOT of fans.

However.. I am considering some cold cathode uv lighting which would take up two of the 3 pin connectors on the board.... Hmmm These parts better get here soon!!! I'm gonna end up spending a fortune on add ons before I start. UGH!!!!!!

You wont lose any power, I expect you'll want to put the three rad fans onto 1 channel and control them as one (maybe the same with the case fans) which is possible on the mobo if they're low rpm/noise. Your mobo is 12w (1 amp) per channel - if you tell us what fans you have we can tell you how many are safe on one channel.
