ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 or ASRock Z68 EXTREME4 GEN3

post #1 of 22
Thread Starter
ive narrowed it down to these two; never bought a motherboard before and just wanted some input on which board is better/less problematic for a N00B's first build. will be paired with a Intel i72600k. they are both the same price on newegg after shipping is factored (193.49 for asrock vs 199.99 for asus)

ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 is a bit better, but it is also more expensive.

You really can't go wrong with either board.

ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3
* Uses Intel NIC
* Has Bluetooth
* Has 12+4 digital VRM
* Supports DTS surround

ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3
* Has floppy drive connector
* Has PLX chip (PCIe bandwidth is not shared)
* Supports THX TruStudio

ASUS uses ASMedia USB 3.0 controller, while ASRock uses Etron USB 3.0 controller. Some people have bad experience with Etron. Not me, though.

this so true, also you can look at the ASrock z68 extreme3 gen3 if you want to save more money. the main differences between the extreme4 and extreme3 are the extreme4 has a 3rd PCIe 2 more SataIII and more USB3.0 and more power phases.
3rd PCI allows for TRI SLI (or Crossfire). You can still run quad SLI with this board. IIRC smile.gif

As is mentioned above, there is nothing that we can find that gives us any reason to purchase the ASRock Z68 EXTREME4 GEN3 considering how many other stellar motherboards we can easily find on the market at comparable prices. I appreciate ASRock's push into the industry, but it is going to have to get its engineering and design teams to truly step up its quality of work to compete with the likes of ASUS, MSI, and Gigabyte.

Just found out that on the ASrock board, 2-way SLI does not work with the first and third PCIE slot. It only works on PCIE slots 1 and 2 because the third slot is only at x4 bandwidth.

You need Extreme7 for 3-way SLI.

Conclusion
ASUS P8Z68-V
Dan's Thoughts:
Quote:
What’s not to like about this board? From a reliability standpoint it was identical to the other boards in this family. Rock solid and stable as hell. From the first minute I put power to it to the time I boxed it up the thing just worked. Yeah it’s fairly stripped down compared to other boards in the series I’ve seen. However that’s part of its beauty. ASUS included their superior voltage design and all the power phases. It’s got everything you need and nothing you don’t. Even though I call the board "stripped down" it’s really still very well optioned. A quality Intel NIC, an eSATA port, SATA 6G and USB 3.0 support etc. If you do need more features then obviously you should look to the higher end offerings in the board family. On the other hand if you are looking for overclocking prowess, excellent stability and quality in a simple and affordable package then you really should look at the P8Z68-V. You won’t be disappointed.
