XFX 7970 DDBE And Open Case GPU's HEAT issue

Thread Starter
Before anyone drops the bomb on these open case gpu's..... just like i almost did on two.
Ive seen more than one review stating that the cooling design is pretty flawed since the hot air doesn't get pushed outside the case but rather inside.

Comparing to the reference cards:
The CPU climbed a further 6c
The GPU Core rose 8c
The GPU PCB climbed 25c +
The ram climbed 9c
And other system components suffered as well due to the air being released inside the case.

SOURCE French translated

Although this card looks really sexy, im going to pass due to these facts.

maybe the case the reviewers used had ZERO airflow? I had a 5970 and an 8800 ultra on the same case with aftermarket coolers blowing hot air inside the case and it didn't affect my temps that much because I had decent airflow
post #3 of 23
Any case with decent airflow would counter act this effect...

Shouldn't have to rely on a case with "decent airflow" since the plain reference cooler is doing its job without "decent airflow" . The card is designed to run cooler and quieter...its doing the latter, but failing significantly on the former. Contradictory imo.

I still prefer the exhaust to the outside of the case cooler.
It's louder, but it doesn't bother me one bit.
I wouldnt bother with that flawed review. its the same as any GPU that dont exhaust rear of case.
Like the MSI Lightning, Gigabyte Windforce, Asus RoG, aftermarket cooling like the Arctic Cooling Extreme. All is the same.

So take that review and ignore it from that site, sure they have no idea how a PC and airflow worked.
Those are not even facts.

Yet Kitguru reviewed the same card and got lower GPU temps.

i saw this review and i saw other reviews from tweaktown, pc perspective and others. Most of them said it ran hotter. Plus you can't compare one review sights numbers to the other numbers unless the test bed and the testing methodology is identical.

You should still have good airflow regardless.
Very few enthusiasts systems have poor airflow.

some cards are known to suffer from thermal paste over use, please check your card for excessive thermal interface material before you RMA it. thumb.gif

tweaktown, pc perspective all show temps lower than reference for the GPu. Not sure where you're seeing this info of temps being higher.
My 5870 with Arctic Accelero is cooler by 20c. Yet I have 200mm fan cooling from the side. Not once did my ram, CPU temps ever got hotter due to that.

Like I said, that review is flawed, if he didnt have proper cooling.

All of these cards are the same as the XFX DD 7970, all heat goes inside case.
