Upcoming Rig

Thread Starter
Hey guys. I want your opinions on this rig that I shall be building on the 27th December. (Should be getting the parts for Christmas, but J o h n R o g e r s wants to come round and build it with me, since he let me go to his to build his with him! )

Anyway, if you have any suggestions, please post them

CPU: Core 2 Duo E6300
Mobo: Gigabyte S3 (965 Chipset)
RAM: GeIL PC6400 Ultra Low Latency (It's orange!) (2x512MB)
PSU: Hiper 580W Non-Modular
Cooler: TTBT/VX or if OcUK has them in stock.. Tuniq Tower!
Case: Enermax CS-527 (It's cheap and has 4 fan mounts )
Fans: A few high cfm 120mms..
Graphics: GeForce 7300GT (Very cheap, looks like decent performance.. til i can save up for a better one)
Extras: Couple of UV cathodes and some UV highlighters for funkiness

Some things will change depending on how much money I get from my DS/GBASP sale on eBay. I hope to make around £160 from these 2. They're both in mint condition but with no box or manuals, but the DS has 2 games and the SP has 4 (3 Pokémon, 1 Spyro ) and a bunch of old GBC games. Add that on to the £130 I'm owed from my friend and my mum, and the money I can save up from pocket money + dinner money (up to £150) and I could have a very nice graphics card! Or maybe a 2GB kit of ram with a decent graphics card

Of course, when I have the rig, I shall have an extensive build log with lots of pictures and lots of overclocking results.

I am missing a hard drive and a DVD burner (although your old rig might be the donor of those)

Otherwise, nice looking rig!

If you get extra cash, I'd get 2GB RAM, and at least something like a 7600GT or so.

Yes I did put a HDD on the shopping list on OcUK. It's a 160GB WD Caviar with 16mb cache.

I'm now looking at Conroes on eBay and there looks to be some good deals. x6800s for £300! But they're bidding ones, which will probably shoot up in price in the last few minutes. There are even some E6600s for only a £30 or so over the 6300, so perhaps I'll get my dad to look on ebay when he comes to ordering the stuff.. He's buying PSU, RAM, CPU and Mobo as christmas gifts I hope, and I'm buying the rest.

What's the total budget for this rig?

And how much for these parts: PSU, RAM, CPU and Mobo

I'm not sure on a total budget, I should really ask my dad lol.

I'm looking to have about 200-250 to spend on the extras though, depending on how much I can resist spending my money.

I would say if I'm lucky, 600-650 is the budget.

The total for the main components is round about £400.

Psu: £52
RAM: £117
CPU: £132
Mobo: £93

(These are from memory)

Check here for some good prices:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 OEM £117.48 Inc VAT (you have aftermarket cooling, so OEM is just fine)
PSU: 580W HiperPower HPU-4M580 Black SLi £52.82 Inc VAT
MoBo: Gigabyte GA 965P-S3 iP965 £86.69 Inc VAT

The CPU and MoBo are definately cheaper... now, looking for some RAM.

This RAM will put you over budget by a bit, but worth it in my opinion:
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit £164.49 Including VAT at 17.5% - Fourth one from top, yup, they're green.

Yeah I was looking at Scan for the CPU and Mobo, they were definitely cheaper. I thought that OEMs were worse overclockers, used in Dell machines, for example.

Not too sure about that... if you're concerned, just pick up the retail from scan.

Also, if you ever want to build RAID, the Gigabyte S3 and DS3 are not the ideal boards... they don't support RAID over the southbridge, only on a secondary controller over the PCI bus. The Gigabyte DS4 would be nice, but costs a little extra.

I don't think RAID is for me. I'm not a complete hardcore gamer/performance enthusiast. I'm happy if I can play my games at a nice resolution with nice detail settings and a nice, smooth FPS.

Thanks for your help so far

Alright I'm looking to finalize the list.

The only thing that has changed is that I am now getting the OEM E6300 which saves around £10 and I have changed the GeIL for G.Skill HZ 6400, which comes in at a hefty £193.99.

If you have any suggestions at all which could save money, please post them

here's a screenshot of the cart on OcUK, rather than copying everything out
