Possible Conroe Build - Page 3

$1600? You have more potential than you think.
CPU: E6600
MOBO: Gigabyte DS3
GPU: X1950XTX
PSU: PC P&C Silencer 610W
HDD: 2x WD 160GB 16MB cache.
RAM: 2GB G.Skill HZ DDR2-800
TOTAL: $1460 + Shipping.
I'd balance that a little better RyGuy. The X1950XTX is a little over the top right now with DX10 coming in about a year (my estimate). An X1900 will keep him going good until then, and allow for better motherboard (one that actually supports RAID on the southbridge, something the DS3 lacks)..

My picks thus:

Subtotal: $1,432.94 + $19.58 shipping = Total $1,452.52. Leaves around $150 for fun stuff and games

Not a bad idea, is RAID through the SB that much better than through the onboard controller?

The onboard controller is over the southbridge. The Gigabyte primary onboard controller does NOT support RAID (read my FAQ). The only RAID supported on that motherboard is on a secondary Gigabyte controller through the PCI bus. This has a lower bandwidth than the southbridge, and is also limited to two disk RAID solutions only. The DS4 should be out soon, with the ICH8R southbridge, and will support RAID on the primary controller.

The P5W DH Deluxe supports Crossfire by default (hence my preference for an ATI card, which is my overall preference at the moment anyway). However, SLI can be done on this board with modded drivers (sdumper is doing exactly that). I would stay away from the Intel versions of the nForce4 and even nForce 5xx boards at the moment, since it's known they don't overclock that well.

Spend $30 more for the Asus P5W64 WS Pro and you won't regret it

Asus P5W64 WS PRO - $294
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 - $320
Sapphire X1900XT 256MB - $235
Ocz GameXtream 700W - $130
GSKILL PC6400 HZ - $270
Seagate Perpendicular HD - 2x$75=$150

Total $1399 + shipping

reason that i picked the 256MB X1900XT is because of the DX10 card. Like Chozart said, it will be out soon, so might as well save some $$ for it

Upgraded the PSU to 700W so you can run CrossFire, SLI. Ect......... without worrying about not having enough power

The Seagate are a bit better because of the Perpendicular Technology, for the same price as the WD, why not?

BenHagerty: stick with a single card for now. You don't want to waste on two cards with DX10 not too far in the future. Get an X1900XT (either 256MB, or 512MB - I'd say the 512MB), and game happily until DX10. Then you can go dual cards if you want to.

Mikey122687: advantages of the P5W64 WS? Only thing I see is the extra PCI-E x16 slots. However, you'll still be limited to x8, x8 bandwidth once you go Crossfire/SLI.

Since I haven't seen it mentioned, you will really really want a decent cooler for your CPU. I would go with a Scythe Infinity or a Big Typhoon, and either way I would add the Silverstone FM121 to it to get that extra edge.

I think the P5W64 has more stability since it's a workststion/server board, and it's been proven to hit 500+ FSB out of the box.

But you can hit 500FSB. Not to mention more stability on it. X8 doesn't run that slow compare to the X16. Its slower obviously, but not tremendously slow

Edit: RyGuy explained everything
