Buying RAM before price increase

Thread Starter
So i've been noticing the price of RAM is getting higher.

I plan to buy the AsRock Fatal1ty Gen3 z68 board. This will be in a few months time. But since RAM is cheap but increasing I though I'd get it while its relatively cheap.

I belive the board supports DDR3 - 2133(OC), however I've got a few I think should be ok, just need your guys opinions.

I wana get 16GB.

G-Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24) 1.5V - at £37.27 - x2
Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB) 1600MHz 9-9-9-24, 1.5V - at 73.25
Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866Mhz Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24) - at £59.99 x2
Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit - at £34.99 x2

Not too sure, im gona get it from ebuyer/overclockers/scan.

Ram @ 2133 is unnecessarily expensive. By that I mean you really wont see much performance gains beyond 1600.

Likewise spending extra "just to fill the slots now" is throwing away money.
Most users don't need 16GB RAM. Get 2x4GB @ 1600 CL9 and be done with it.

If you find you do actually need extra ram in the near future you can always add more (prices might even drop by then) or get higher density modules when those become mainstream in a year or two.

Now I got 3 monitors and loads more desktop space i'll be using it to fill it with loads of applications.biggrin.gif

I'd go for a 1600mhz set with a colour scheme that suits your build. I'm not a specialist on the subject but from what i've read there isn't alot of difference in the real world between different sets. 8gb of G-Skill 1600Mhz RipjawsX would look nice with the red on the motherboard biggrin.gif

I'd say you are good with the 16GB at 1600 C9, just be careful if you get RAM with tall heatsinks your CPU cooler needs to have clearance so you can fit all 4 modules in your board. If it's really gonna be a while before you build though, there is a pretty good chance the cost of 8GB modules will go down, and 2 8GB should be better than 4 4GB. Right now it just seems like prices are rising because we are coming off of Thanksgiving/Christmas sales. I'd say the price is more stabilizing than increasing, and if you keep your eyes open should find a decent sale before your build time.

You make a good point. However Im in the UK, and we dont get that many great deals when it comes to PC hardware, infact I've just taken a look at newegg and we get screwd.

I'll give it a few days to think it over. But you're right, 8gb modules should go down, but probably wont go as cheap as 2x4gb I dont think.

If you look at the price of 4gb or 8gb ddr2-800, buying up a few sets of nice cheap
ram to sell later might not be a bad idea, especially with 8gb going for $24 these days.
