Asus P5B: Can't change CPU frequency

Thread Starter
P5B Deluxe Bios version 0614
e6600
Corsair CM2X 6400C4 2x1024mb

I set the AI Tuning to manual but then it doesn't let me change the CPU frequency. I also can't change the mulitplier ratio; it's stuck at 9.

Any ideas what's going on?

1. you can download the latest BIOS (unless you already have that ) and flash to it.
2. don't use AI tuning stuff, go inot BIOS and switch the frequency. read the intel OC'ing guide for teh basics.
and fill out your system specs.

AI Tuning is what it is called in the bios. I've never used the windows OCing program.

What I'm saying is that when I'm in the BIOS (I do have the latest non-beta version) I can't change the CPU frequency or the multi. Basicly, I can't overclock at all because eveything worth overclocking is some how locked. The words are not greyed out or anything, it's just nothing happens when I, for example, select the CPU frequency setting and hit enter to bring up the options nothing happens. Yet I can change all the other settings. The only two settings that won't change are the two I've already mentioned.

In the BIOS when you set AI Tuning to Manual it should expand the BIOS Selections down the screen. Under this, should be a setting for FSB. You need to change this to change the frequency of the CPU. The running frequecy is determined by multiplying this FSB number by the CPU multiplier. The CPU multiplier is changed in the CPU Information screen in the BIOS. The first selection in the BIOS for the cpu should be Unlock Multiplier. Set this to enable. After this, I like to exit the BIOS and return back upon a Save and Exit. You should also set your CPU Vcore to 1.3250 V and your NB Vcore to 1.45 V to start your overclock. In Addition, you most likely will need to set your RAM timings manually. Start at 266 FSB and slowly work your way up in frequency.

Hope this helps....

Another question? What version of the P5B do you have?

The current BIOS files are as follows:

ASUS P5B = 0509
ASUS P5B Deluxe = 0614 (Beta 0706)
ASUS P5B Deluxe WiFi-AP = 0614 (Beta 0706)

PS - Please fill out your system specs so that I can better assist you....

When the BIOS screen expands down after setting the AI Tuning to Manual the only setting that has reference to FSB is the FSB Termination Voltage. The setting labled "CPU Frequency" has the number 266 by it which makes me think it is acctually the FSB mhz setting BUT that is the one that I can't change for some reason. When I arrowkey over that setting the info bar to the right says "Valid input value: 100 - 650". By all means I should just be able to change this setting as I'm sure it is the FSB but I can't. I sent an email to Asus support but who knows how long they'll take to respond.

Also, I have already enabled the Unlock Multiplier but then I go to change it from 9 to, lets say, 6 but that doesn't work either. I select the setting and hit enter and no menu comes up.

I have version 1.03G of the P5BD

Sounds like your P5B is screwy. You might want to power down the computer, unplug it, and remove the RTC battery (the quarter shaped battery). This will completely reset the main board so you can start from scratch. Whatever you do, don't use the Windows Ailife application. It can really mess with the BIOS.

your motherboard isn't screwy there. from what it sounds like you keep hitting enter and nothing pops up yet some menus you hit enter and something does.

try hitting the + and - keys on the key pad and that should change the values
