Windows 7 Minidumps and permisions headache

Thread Starter
I've got a driver that keeps giving me the old BSOD but I can't find out which one it is without looking at the minidump file, I just keep getting access denied even though its my pc. Grrrr.

Can any one tell me what to do to fix this in a language I'll understand?

Either the TrustedInstaller or NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM is the owner of record for most found within \windows. You can copy files out of \windows\minidump, but cannot work with them in place unless you change file permission settings via the takeown & icacls commands first.

Let's try and simply move the dump files out of minidump and move them to a new folder, or desktop for example.

I've moved the file to the desktop and take ownership of it but it still says access denied when I try to open it or zip it or anything really.

Start > type msconfig into the search bar, hit enter > Tools > Change UAC Settings, click launch > Lower the bar all the way to "Never Notify", restart, try again.

It's also possible permissions have messed up, which you can then try this:
Quote:
Go to an elevated command prompt, in other words, run CMD as admin.

navigate to c:\ windows\minidump
In other words,
C:
cd \windows\minidump

type followiing:
TakeOwn /F . /R
and hit enter. Please notice the "." which is essential.

Now type following:
ICACLS . /GRANT:R KARL:(F) /T
and hit enter. Please notice the "." which is essential.

NOTE: SUBSTITUTE THE CORRECT USER FOR "KARL".
To determine the current people with persmissions:
ICACLS .

and hit enter. Please notice the "." which is essential.

That seemed to have done the trick.

Don't suppose you know what ICACLS is for? Always good to know new things.

ICALCS is a command line utility that's used to modify permissions on a computer that's running an NTFS file system.
