2500K Voltage staying high even at 1.6ghz idle speed.

I have an Intel DZ68BC motherboard and an i5 2500K. I have a very modest and stable overclock of 4.1Ghz on 1.224v but when my system idles it only goes down to 1.208. I know 1.208 at idle isn't going to burn the house down, or even cause long term damage, but It would be nice if it went down to .8v or so like its supposed to. I am very new to Intel overclocking and am still learning. It would be nice to find someone else with an Intel P or Z series board that can throw out some tips. Intel hasn't made it easy with a UEFI BIOS yet :-( Any links or youtube vids would be much appreciated. There isn't much out there for Intel Boards.

I believe you have to use offset voltage in order to do that.

Tried playing around with offset voltage a little... I seriously think there is something wrong with my BIOS/Board... Set a dynamic voltage of 0.000 which is stock 1.0v with a speed-boost offset of 200mV. When I booted into windows my voltage was all over the place! 1.6~1.1~1.4.... What gives?

On my stable setup I have the dynamic voltage set at 0.200 and the speed-boost offset at 40mV and its rock solid yet my system idles at 1.208v when the clock is down to 1.6Ghz. I don't get it. Very frustrating.

Dont play with offset voltage without knowing how it works Jayjr smile.gif

Offset uses your VID amount and adds or subtracts depending on what you put in the voltage field in the bios. To find our your cpu's VID, download realtemp and click on the box in top right, it will either be displaying 00:00:01, 100W or will say 1.365 VID etc etc.

1.208v is the stock volt setting for sandy bridge chips I believe, Im not sure what dynamic voltage or speed-boost offset mean, never heard of those.

Dynamic Voltage on the Intel board means that when Turbo is kicked in it will run at user defined voltage (+ offset) but when it's idle it should go down to 0.8 or something like that. By speed-boost I meant the Intel Turbo (sorry wrong term). My issue here is when I use the Automatic overclocking feature in the BIOS it works great with one flaw.. At 4.0Ghz the auto overclock gives the cpu way too much voltage. Something like 1.38 which in turn adds about 8 degrees Celsius. When I set a static voltage like 1.24 It runs great at 4.0Ghz but again its "Static" which keeps the voltage at 1.24 even at idle 1.6Ghz speeds. As soon as I try to make the static voltage dynamic with an offset is when everything goes haywire. Just wish I had thought about the lack of community support going with an Intel board over an Asus or Gigabyte :-( But then again maybe I'll get the hang of it and become that Intel board support person for the SB community tongue.gif

If you manually set your voltage it will stay like that even with C1E, C6,c3, EIST enabled. You would need to use offset to allow for a drop during power save. When your OCing its safer than voltage constantly changing with Load drop as that can cause BSOD's if the response isn't fast enough in some boards and some configs (depends on user) Offset is your best bet at achieving this. And a high voltage even with a low clock speed won't burn the chip any worse than at fast speeds. Just less heat.
