Computer freezes and lags horribly! Need help!

Thread Starter
Like others' posts I've read, wasn't quite sure where to place this thread but anyways, my computer is having some serious issues with the gaming rig I built last summer (as listed below)! Couple of months ago, Firefox started "Not Responding" every once in a while - this led me to belief (at least back then) that it was merely a browser problem and I figured some plug in or addon was defunct. As time went on, it started doing this more and more frequently to the point where right now, it "doesn't respond" as soon as you start it, and freezes for about 5-10 second every 5-10 seconds. Web browsing is IMPOSSIBLE on Firefox (I have also downloaded Waterfox and experience the same issues here). Whether I'm watching a youtube video, on Facebook, or even scrolling on Yahoo, it freezes. I've tried IE and the same thing happens, but seems to NOT occur in Chrome. Rather, Shockwave Flash crashes uncontrollably here. I originally thought this was an isolated web browser problem, but when IE AND Chrome went, I thought there could be more to it. Most recently, my whole computer has been acting up, confirming these thoughts. When I click around on basic files in My Computer - like click to open the Documents tab or a specific harddrive or whathaveyou, every now and then the whole system will freeze and, like happens in any web browser, will temporarily say Not Responding in the top of the window for a few moments and then unlock itself. Another odd thing I have noticed is that all of a sudden a couple weeks ago, when I started up BF3, there was a horrible lag in the game, but only when I tried to run around. No other aspect of the game or the game itself seemed to lag, except when i tried to run around my character would start glitching and the whole game would glitch. If i stayed in one spot I could look around and shoot perfectly fine, but running gave me trouble. Oddly enough, this only occurs online - in both BF3 and BFBC2 online, this running glitch occurs, but when playing ME2, it runs smoothly. Even more oddly, is that for some reason, when I went to check the Windows Experience Index yesterday, what previously read as 7.9 for both graphics and gaming graphics (as I am using a 580 superclocked), now reads 6.0. I HAVE updated recently with what I believe to be the latest drivers but I could be entirely wrong. I have done full system scans for any viruses many times within the past week and found nothing, defragged all harddrives and run CCleaner but the computer still has the lagging/freezing problem. I have uninstalled/reinstalled all browsers, disabled all plugins, downloaded Waterfox (to replace Firefox), yet the browsers too freeze up, whether they are "Not Responding" or shockwave flash crashes. As to the driver for my gpu, it is 8.17.12.9053 dated 12/17/2011. (NOTE: as an example of the system freezing in general, when I clicked on the "Driver" tab of the gpu dialogue box, the window was "Not Responding" for about 10 seconds before unlocking.) If anyone can PLEASE give me any info to help me solve this problem I would be forever grateful! Will obviously provide any necessary feedback to answer questions regarding the system that anyone has!

(Another note: tried writing this in Firefox first just to see if I could, and it froze so many times that I had to give up writing it after about the 4th line. Switched to chrome and no problems here, seems to only glitch when flash comes into play - eg. youtube.)

I know you said you ran your anti-virus etc., but dang, that sounds like virus/malware/spyware to me. I've been through the same thing: Been there, and had to end up paying the bill to have a "professional" fix the problem. There are viruses that will bypass at least some anti-virus software and remain hidden. What kind of anti virus/malware/spyware do you have? Do you have CoreTemp? If not, search for it, download it, run it. If so, open it and watch the CPU load. If you have no applications running on your desktop, and you are just at idle, the processor load percentage should stay in the single digits. If it is constantly in the double digits while at idle, you have a virus problem for sure - or at least I'm 99% sure. You might have to take your rig into a qualified shop to get it fixed. Have you searched the internet for problems similar to yours? That usually turns up something, too.

Am using Microsoft Security Essentials for anti-virus, will try others if there are better and will run scans. Don't have CoreTemp but it's downloading right now, and I've searched the web but nothing exactly like my problems - some similarities and have tried solutions given to them (ie. Waterfox as opposed to Firefox, defrag, etc.) but still having problems unfortunately.

Edit: Have a bunch of applications open and while sitting idle, loads are spiking at max at 4%.

Loads at 4%... That's good. Man. I don't what else to suggest. Sorry!

T/S Suggestions.
Registry or data corruption= REFORMAT
SSD Issues= Remove SSD and REFORMAT using just a HD.
RAM Issues= Try using one stick at a time in designated slot.
Graphics card related= Reseat and/or try a different card.
CMOS Reset.

Noob questions, but what is registry corruption? And it might very well be the SSD because it seems to be about 3% fragmented each week! I hadn't defragged for a while and it maxed at 7% fragmented, but each week since then (about a month ago) it's shown 3% fragmented. That or the other likely cause would be the graphics card, being that the graphics scores on the Windows Experience Index now read 6.0 as opposed to 7.9 like they used to. Also, reseating it might be impossible due to the size of the case... was looking to upgrade the case to a full tower soon, guess this might be motivation. Finally, going super noob on you here, but what's T/S and CMOS stand for? And thank you very much for the input - will try these first thing in the morning and post back with results.

have you run a full scan with microsoft security esentials and not a quick scan cause sometimes you need to do a ful scan
also use cccleaners registry scanner that might clean up soom clutter in the registry
new nvidea drivers get them direct from nvidea and not from the gpu maker they shoul be numberd 290
you could also try a ckdisk but im unfamiilliar with ssd drives
cmos is situated on your motherboard look in your motherboard manual to find where it is
when you found it move the jumper cap over to the next pin ie pin 1 and2 are coverd by jumper cap at moment move the cap so its on pins 2 and3 leav it thiere for 30 seconds then move it back to 1 and 2
make sure the power supply is disconnected from the wall socket before you do it
once you don that and turned the computer back on you will have to go into the bios and set everything back to the settings you hade it on

You are NEVER supposed to defrag a SSD! That might be your problem right there if you've done it before. Sounds like you're going to need to wipe and reinstall everything.

This. An SSD should be fragmented anyways. I'd say a full erase and reinstall is an order

SSDs take care of their ow fragmention on their own and have trash collection and TRIM for additional help thus defragging isn't needed.
