[PA] Final Fantasy XIII-2 Demo Now Available

Square-Enix’s demo for Final Fantasy XIII-2 is now available on both Xbox Live and Playstation Network, and I was shocked to find that it was actually pretty fun. I was one of those people who just did not get Final Fantasy XIII, and ended up playing way longer than I should have waiting for the game to “get good”. Well I’m happy to report that the XIII-2 demo suggests that Square-Enix wasn’t just indulging in lip service when they said that they were going to take a serious look at what didn’t work in XIII...

The game left such a sour taste in peoples mouths...Final Fantasy is doomed until they go back to the basics. Terraria was closer to the FF I know and love than any of the last 3 games were.

Just gonna go ahead and copy/paste my impressions of the demo that I posted elsewhere:
Quote:
I just finished the Final Fantasy XIII-2 demo and I was pleasantly surprised. It isn't Final Fantasy VI, VII or even XII, but if the entire game is anything like the Bresha Ruins section then it certainly isn't Final Fantasy XIII. The level design is much improved. It's not Skyrim, but it's not "pressing up and X" either. If you were happy with the amount of exploration in areas from pretty much every Final Fantasy title prior to X then you shouldn't have any problem here. There were twists and turns, treasure chests, etc.

Towns don't appear to be as fleshed out as previous titles, however. There were no buildings that could be entered in Bresha, all shopping done via an NPC that appears throughout the game (even at certain points in "dungeons"). Other NPCs are around offering casual chitchat about current events, either by talking to them directly, getting a few lines as you pass by or overhearing conversation with other NPCs. Some offered little side quests, like retrieving some lost items or killing a somewhat powerful enemy. Despite the somewhat shallow nature of the town, it and the NPCs were a big improvement over XIII, whose world felt completely barren aside from Nautilus.

Combat seems largely unchanged. Paradigms play just about the same as they did in XIII and I didn't notice any significant additions in terms of abilities, spells, etc. Slightly disappointing as I thought XIII's combat was a bit too simplistic despite being fun. This being pretty early in the game, I'm hoping that each Paradigm gets some new combat options later on. Auto-Battle returns, which will probably upset some folks, but really you don't even have to acknowledge its existence. You can set Abilities (where you pick actions manually) as the default in options, making it like every other Final Fantasy game.

The Pokemon aspect wasn't too bad I suppose. It seems like a poor excuse for a third main party member in terms of story, but as a game mechanic it's handled fairly well. I didn't mess around with it too much, but fusing monsters and leveling them up is pretty neat. They're not really any different from normal characters in combat.

There wasn't much in the way of story. Some of the dialogue is a little cheesy, but nothing too bad. The featured music was good, but I'm sure everyone is familiar with a larger selection of the game's OST already so that's not really worth going into detail about.

Overall, if the rest of the game is like the demo then I think we have a very solid RPG on our hands. It's not an oldschool Final Fantasy, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing (no matter how much I wish Square would make one). On its own, it seems like a promising game. If you maintain that Final Fantasy XIII is literally the worst game ever made, this probably isn't for you.

So yeah, if you're the type of person that can enjoy different styles of RPGs (i.e. traditional Final Fantasy, Shin Megami Tensei, etc.) and refrain from comparing it to Final Fantasy III-IX and XII then I think you would enjoy this.

FFXIII was one of my favourites in the series, the battle system is great fun to work with and paradigm shifting for buffs, debuffs, healing, stagger building and stagger stalling made the combat new and entertaining each time around. I can't wait to get back from college and try out the demo. smile.gif

If the combat is the same I'm happy, XIII was linear to begin with but it got a lot more open towards chapter 11 when you hit Archylte Steppe. smile.gif

About the only changes made to combat are the ability to switch characters (either during combat or on the field), Paradigm Tuning (change AI tactics, similar to Gambits in XII) and Blood Damage.

Blood damage is a special kind of damage that reduced your maximum HP. For instance, if a character with 400 HP receives 50 Blood Damage, their max HP is effectively reduced to 350. You can heal Blood Damage by using the Saboteur Paradigm, Wound Potions or by finishing a battle, as all Blood Damage is removed at the end of each fight. You can also inflict Blood Damage on enemies.

I just gave it a whirl on the PS3 for a few hours and I'm incredibly impressed. The pet system seems cool, you can have any general mob as a member of your party. I also like the cinematic sequences (and pet skills, etc), they seem to break a lot of the repetition in battles and add a bit more flare, and the new crystarium looks like it would take some dedication to master. The blood damage adds a bit more difficulty to some of the longer battles which might be a pain in the ass but makes them more rewarding. tongue.gif I also like how you get rewarded in loot for getting perfect battle scores.

I can't really think of any negatives, besides mogs annoying voice. tongue.gif I would have marked the absence of some XIII characters as a negative, but I assume they'll make some sort of appearance in the storyline? I've seen cinematics with Lightning...

You can also recruit unique enemies later on, both in the normal game and through DLC (like the Omega boss battle Amazon is offering as a pre-order bonus). Sounds like you'll have a lot of options other than just generic monsters.

Some of XIII's cast make appearances, such as Lightning, Snow, Hope, etc. Lightning is fairly important to the story (though she's only playable for a very small portion of the game), not entirely sure about everyone else. Snow is playable as a "Guest Character" at some point, Hope's shown up in a number of trailers.

They've also talked about expanding on the story with DLC later on. One example was the possibility of a DLC side story featuring Sazh as the main character.
