What 2x Teleconverter for Canon EOS?

I'm looking to get a 2x teleconverter/extender for my Canon, but I'm not sure which to get. I only plan to use it in certain cases outdoors where I need that extra reach (wildlife, outdoor sports, etc.). I will be mounting it on the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II so I can afford to lose 2 stops of light. I don't want to spend a lot since I won't be using this all the time, but I also don't want to completely destroy the quality of my images. My main concern is that AF, IS, and metering still work like normal and that the correct aperture is reported to the camera.

The prices seem to range from $89 for a cheap Vivitar to $475 for Canon's latest 2x Extender III. Is that cost difference justified? There are also some Sigma, Tamron, and Bower options in the middle. Will those handicap my lens functionality?

Which do you recommend given sporadic use on a budget? Which has the biggest "bang for the buck"? Thanks!

Canons are good but pricey. I have had good luck with a 1.4 x kenko and there are good results with the 2x also.

(can't find the thread I am looking for with a good review but you get the idea)

Yeah, if you can't afford the Canon TC, then I'd recommend the Kenko ones.

Thanks! It seems that Kenko has 3 levels - MC4, MC7, and Pro 300. However, I haven't been able to find the difference except that the lower priced items may contain fewer elements and no coating? Do you know what the real differences are? Will all of them report the adjusted aperture and focal length to my camera for correct EXIF data? Is the Pro 300 worth the extra money?
