SSD and SATA III question

Thread Starter
Ive just got a corsair force 3 120gb but I only have sata2 ports on my mobo. I was looking at getting a sata 3 card to add a couple of sata ports and also some usb3 ports
The one ive been looking at is the link below the thing is my mobo has the following ports PCIe 2.0 x16 (taken by GPU) 2 PCIe 2.0 x1 and 3 PCI slots now the card linked below says it needs PCIe x4, x8 of x16

So my question is 1 will it work? and 2 will it show any improvement I already get 240mbs read and write in ATTO but the drive is capable of double that. or if anyone can suggest an alternative that would be suitable that would be brilliant

If the card states that it requires an x4, x8 or x16 slot, and you have none, than it seems like it will not work for your setup.

i thought with pc bits usualy being backwards compatiable it could work but thought performance might be effected i might just get a better mobo if i cant find a suitable card to use. it was a budget mobo and bought before the SSD was. not that the SSD is slow it was a fantastic upgrade overall but i could do with a few more sata ports anyway which is why i thought i may as well go sata3 if i can

The SSD is backwards compatible and will work on SATA II. You won't get the listed speeds but it will work, Recently I had an e8400 system and like yours it works just fine but an upgrade was in the cards so I went ahead and did it. Now I can stretch a few more years out of things with the new chip and m/b.

i cant see what rig is showwing in my sig as im using IE6 (at work) and the way it displays the site (and most others) is horrible to say the least.]
ive recently upgraded most of my system to an i5 2400 with 8gb ripjaw's the drive is fantastic in general. your right about the speeds its rated for 550mbs and i get 240mbs which is why i was looking at some sata III ports. i think i better keep looking see if i can find one that will work

Add on card is a waste of money imo as you won't notice a difference in performance.

A sata 6gb/s connection to the chipset will always be faster.

I'm surprised your sandy mboard doesn't have any 6gb/s connections. Which board is it?

its an ASUS P8H61 USB3 to be honest im regreting the board choice a bit i was on a budget at the time and it did what i needed but its obviously not very future proof .i even had to unplug one of my DVD drives when i got the SSD as it only has 4 sata ports in total

For the price of an expansion card that may or may not have conflict issues you might consider the option of just upgrading your motherboard to one that has all of the ports that you may need. This way everything is contained on the board within the system it is designed for,

PS: Your sig shows an old EVGA board smile.gif
