Well I personally have never bothered to buy a sound card ever lol. I don't use flash speakers though. I've only got Creative SB250 2.0s since my parents go crazy if I have my music up too loud. Anyways the onboard sound will I'm sure be adequate for 2.1 speakers.

I'd get the gigabyte. nForce chipsets on Intel never have been really hot. The Gigabyte has the 965P chipset which is a good one for the Core 2 Duo.

The main drawback of the Gigabyte compared to the ASUS is the lack of RAID on the southbridge (read my FAQ on that). The ASUS, however, does not support DDR2 800 RAM, while the Gigabyte does. The Gigabyte, I think, it the overall better board, unfortunately lacking RAID (same goes for the more expensive DS3)

uh oh... guys.. what can you say about this...

Quote:
according to gigabyte's tech support, the ds3 and s3 models are practically the same, but the ds3 uses solid-state capacitors and has an estimated lifespan of about 5 years compared to the s3's estimated lifespan of about 3 years.
that came from my friend...

You shouldn't worry about that, since that is if they run 24/7.
I've had my non-solid-state caps. mobo for a good 2 years and they don't show use.
