New 2.1 Set-up, $500 budget

Hi all,

I have spent the past few weeks lurking a few audio forums, and have finally decided upon a first time set-up.

Sound Card: ASUS Xonar DX 7.1 Channels PCI Express x1 Interface Sound Card
Amp: Dayton Audio DTA 100a
Sub: Dayton Audio Sub-1200
Speakers: Polk Audio Monitor 40's
Headphones: Audio Technica ATH M50 (I already own these, so not included in $500 budget)

I have even included an incredibly technical diagram for your viewing pleasure. However, before I make the purchases, I had a few questions.

1) Is the DX soundcard proficient here or would I be better served upgrading to the STX?
2) Would an exterior DAC be significantly superior?
3) Are all of my connections in the diagram below proper?
4) For the sub, is placing it on a carpeted floor problematic? What if I place it to the side of my desk instead of centered underneath?
5) Are there any other recommendations for improving the quality or price of this set-up?

Thank you all very much. I will make sure to document the set-up along the way.

Looks fine, but with a 500 dollar limit and you using the DTA 100a, I would definitely get better speakers.

M50s will see not much of an improvement amped, but what the heck, you have a headphone amp with that amp so why not try it.

If you haven't bought the Xonar or the amp yet, another route to consider is a stereo receiver or external DAC with all the connections you'll need. It'll provide better digital to analog conversion (audibly, better quality and clearer details).
