You don't say?

Lucky? Well-off or fortunate? Damn near anyone can join the military and get the same deal. Most people would rather not since they don't want to sacrifice anything.

How is joining the military any of those?

Certain people can't get into the military for medical reasons. I'm sorry you're offended that I went after your ego, but not everyone is a bad person for not wanting to go into the military.

The benefits of being in the military, and those that carry on after you've left are fairly nice. Some people love being in the military. I would say that's fortunate.

Most of the computers at my school use Windows 7, and I like it that way. I've never used Linux in my life, and I don't want to be forced into starting. I think that a majority of students were raised on either Windows or Apple OS. Switching to Linux would probably generate outrage amongst students and even faculty.

As for what Apple is planning... I'll stay wary. Sometimes their ideas change the world, other times I wish that they would just stay quiet.

Understandably so IMO. Having to dedicate yourself to the military, move to where they tell you to, be sent on deployment away from your loved ones for extended periods of time requires sacrifice. It's not something I would do, but I understand why those who do get some nice benefits for it. They made sacrifices most people wouldn't and are rewarded as such. The way you talk about it you'd think they just happened upon a pot o'gold at the end of a rainbow.

You are already using Linux if you have an Android phone/tablet. A tablet is what you will be using as an e-book.

LOL. The fact is that the majority of the world is supported by/run Linux/Unix yet people hardly know that or care. If you have a android phone/pad then you're indirectly using Linux(Google's changes to it).

Win7 is fine(gaming)...but it's a cost for the software and then a cost for the support. Linux is a cost for the support. At it's current state there's very little that the general student would be able to tell the difference after you covered a few basics. And the control/security it would give the admins would be a benefit along with the likely less maintenance. But the problem you mentioned about change it basically the reason Apple and MS have pushed so hard to be in the school systems...people are not happy with change. If you exposed a person to all 3 at the start they'd probably end up indifferent or widely variant on which they like best.

But whatever Apple has planned here I shudder at thoughts of them trying to get into the money involved in books. The iFad is not necessary for a just reading device and is way too expensive for a useful classwork machine. A netbook with a N450 would trump it any day out side of battery life.

Eh. I don't know I'd go over to using e-textbooks exclusively, but if I were able to cut the cost of my textbooks in half, I could afford to buy a Kindle Fire every semester and not spend any more money than I am spending now.

Oh, well that's not the way I mean to come off. My dad was in the military until he retired after 21 years. I've moved around a couple times, but not as much as I've heard/seen with others. I understand the military, it's concept, and I respect it.

Saying that, I will say this: I go to school by one of the largest military bases in the US. I deal with non-traditional military-based students each year (for the past 6 semesters now) and each year a majority of them have their head stuck up their bum because they were all 'military guys/girls'. I am in no way saying that this is relevant to the OCN user above or for all current/retired military personnel. I am also not biased against them either. Two of the best people I know are retired/former military. It just irks me a little bit when I see someone flaunting the 'I deserve this, because I did this' card.
