PSU Died, need suggestions for a new one

Thread Starter
Hi all. Lately I've been having an issue with my PSU shorting out against my case. Every time I bump my desk, it moves an exposed wire, grounds against the case, and short circuits, and shuts off my computer. It had been recovering OK, haven't had the time to look for the short. Well, to make a long story short, I was testing an overclock, 4.5GHz 1.33Vcore, and I bumped my desk, it shorted out. Well, it killed the power supply. I can't jump it with the green wire and ground, it won't do anything plugged into my motherboard. It's dead. I need suggestions for my PSU.

Here's a few requirements.

1. It needs to be modular.

2. It needs to be able to sustain high overclocks. 4.5GHz+ CPU, 800MHz+ GPU. (750w+)

3. Sub $130

Main Components are:

i5 2500k @ 4.5GHz 1.33V
HD 5970
1 SSD, 1 HDD, 1 ODD

If you get lucky, you can snag what I got, SeaSonic X750, for just a few bucks over $100. The SeaSonic X series I see highly recommended on here, but feel free to get a high wattage in the same line. They don't fit the price you're looking for at the regular price, but I think that's a hard price to hit for a modular PSU.

i would say this is a worthy PSU to suit your needs and budget Rosewill CAPSTONE-750 750W. the CAPSTONE Series are awsome PSUs from Rosewill. thumb.gif

woops, as good as this unit above is, its not modular.. still sticking with rosewill then for a decent modular PSU

I'd probably recommend the SeaSonic as well, although it is a little pricey at around $160. I have the Corsair TX750 V2 and it's $99 now. Great features, stable clean power... but mediocre build quality IMO. It does come with a 5 year warranty though.

Here's an interesting discussion on PSU quality:

I have the same PSU as you and haven't had a problem with it.
What do you mean when you said "mediocre build quality"?

Capstone are very good, not modular though. Silverstone Strider Plus 750 Silver watt is modular. NZXT HALE82 750 WATT power supply.
Catch a sale on the Kingwin Lazer Gold 850 or the Sentey Golden Steele 850.

There is a review of the Siverstone on jonnyguru, very good.

I have 2 PSU's.. The Corsair and a 500w Thermaltake. The Thermaltake I bought in early 2008 and the Corsair last year when I started on my new PC. I used the Thermaltake quite heavily - always adding and removing hd's to read info off of them for myself and other people. The Thermaltake is now in it's 2nd or 3rd system and still going strong... *knocks on wood* LOL..

Then there's the Corsair... my motherboard crashed after 30 days (bad batch of Asus boards), so I put the TX750 right back in it's original packaging. Fast forward a few months and I break out the Corsair to complete my build and one of the SATA connecters breaks on me! This thing literally sat in the closet for months and it breaks! Granted the connecter didn't shatter - one of the side walls cracked and fell off - but that's not the quality you expect for a top-tier PSU. I wasn't pulling or yanking on it - just typical cable management movement. Second time I used it and about only 4 weeks of real world usage and a piece chips off. Make it even worse the Corsair cost me literally double the price of the Thermaltake that'll be 4 years old in April.

Again, this is just my pesronal experiences, which is why I said "IMO". Supposedly, it's the exact same PSU as the Seasonic SS-750AT.

I have a thermaltake tough power 775w and I got it for $70 on tigerdirect. If you do get thermaltake then ONLY go with the toughjpower series because any other ones have had problems. Mine is ice cold though and puts out a decent amount of power plus it's modular.

EDIT: just looked and that deal is over frown.gif but I would suggest a corsair, seasonic, or rosewill. Either brand will serve you well.
