Museum type push button video player?? How do I build one?

At museums or stores, you see the display stands that have a screen and you press a button and it plays a informational movie about a product, what systems do these use? Can I build a system that will do this, be it a pc or a stand alone dvd or other type of media player? This is for a showroom at my shop. We basically want to be able to press a single button and have a video play once then shut off. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The easiest way to do it would be to set it up with a computer. It would be really simple. Make a playlist with only the clip you want to play in it. Then when you hit play the clip will play and stop when it is over until you hit play again. This can be done easily enough in windows media player. Just checked to make sure it would operate like I thought it would.

Then set your computer to never sleep or anything like that so it is always 100% ready.

The trick is building your play button. This in itself is not to hard. I would most likely modify an existing input device for that. A little soldering and you are ready to go. Many keyboards have a play button on them or a cheap gamepad from walmart that is usb could be rigged up to work or used as a basis for this mod. The ugly I am sure would be hidden in the display. Then just map the desired key to the play/pause button and you are good to go.

Another more complicated way to do it is to set it up as a vm from another computer. This would save some money in resources as it would save a dedicated computer sitting in the display. but would always need to be tied to the network to play the video. The setup would be the same in the software level like I mentioned above just the actual resources in the case would be far less.

In that case you should only need kvm over ip switch to manage the inputs/outputs instead of a whole pc. I could be wrong on that as I have never tried it but I am thinking that is how you would do it.

This scenario here is stretching my realm of knowledge as I haven't done to much with virtual machines or accessing them remotely. I am learning but am far from an expert. Anyone please feel free to correct this or add to it.

Was thinking of something on the cheaper side, we would be building maybe 5-6 individual displays for each of our products. building or buying 6 computers wouldn't be cheap.
