[UPDATE: #3 -- It's Finally Done !!! ]

I've finally completed my build after a few hiccups along the way and some changes. Here are some pics, what do you all think?

Changes:
- Returned the NZXT H2 case and got the Silver Stone FT-02
- Upgraded to a 700W Modular Power Supply
- Added a 2nd ASUS EAH6850 for Crossfire

Issues:
- Kingston SSD - CheckSum issue that prevented the installation of Wins7, RMA without any hassles.

Question for the folks here:
- Would the performance improvement be worth it to switch out the 6850's for a 6970 or 7950? Please let me know.. thanks.

=====================================================================
Hello All:

Just signed up today and this is my first post smile.gif

It's been over 10 years since I put together a gaming PC and the last PC game I played was Mech Warrior.

With that being said... YES! I am ready for an upgrade and new game(s) addiction.

====================================
Current System:
====================================
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1600+
MB: ABIT NF7-S - Socket A
DISPLAY: 17" CRT monitor
MEMORY: 512K
HD: 80GB Hard-drive
GPU: N/A

====================================
New System:
====================================
CPU: i7 2600K --> Just got this as a birthday present :-)
DISPLAY: 27in Samsung LED --> Generous donation from Dad's work :-)

On a UPS Truck:
CASE: NZXT H2 Black ($99)
PS: OCZ ZS Series 650W 80PLUS ($59 after rebate)
HD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1.5TB ($180)
COOLING: H80 Cosair ($99)

Wish List:
MB: ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z - LGA 1155 ($189)
MEMORY: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 ($35)
SSD: Kingston SSD 128G 128GB SATA III ($175)
GPU: ASUS EAH6850 DC/2DIS/1GD5/V2 Radeon HD 6850 ($139 after rebate)
MOUSE: Logitech G300 ($39)

=====================
Total: $1014
=====================

What do you all think of the MB/Memory/GPU? Go for it?

GPU Question: I read that the best performance per $$$ at the moment is the Radeon 6850 series, but should I be getting something else (should I go with nVidia?) $200 is the max that I want to spend now, possibly do crossfire (or sli) later.

What do you all think of these games?

GAMES:
=====================
Battlefield 3
Civilization V
Star Wars - Old Republic

Please review my wish list and provide suggestions, much thanks!

very generous of your dad's work to get you that monitor. wink.gif

phenomenal choice for mobo, and there is someone selling a few of them in the for sale section for like 150 shipped which is a good deal.

you may want more GPU power. a 560 ti if you can swing it would make you very happy. im sure you can find one within your 200 bone price range.

good luck

[UPDATE: #1]

a.) Despite the heavy snow in Chicago, UPS was timely in delivering the following today...

CASE: NZXT H2 Black --> I picked this case because it looked simple, elegant and should be good for noise reduction. BUT after looking into the other cases within this forum, I wish I would have gotten something else. Now, I am thinking of modifying it to open up a window on the side panel. SO MANY AWESOME cases out there!!!

Side-Note: I wasn't too happy with one concept of the H2, I wish the hard-drive bays would have been turned 90 degrees so that there would be more room for the GPU and also the cables could be hidden from the back panel. Maybe I will do a mod on this part too? In regards to the top hot-swappable SATA dock, I hope I can find some use for it. Maybe storage area for my USB sticks thumb.gif

PS: OCZ ZS Series 650W 80PLUS --> I may return this, should have gotten an 850W (DOH!) -- Please advise, is a 650 just not enough power for my setup? Thanks,

HD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1.5TB --> Sheeesh! When will prices go back down? I want to get another for RAID 1.

COOLING: H80 Cosair --> I was planning on installing the fans differently, per the instructions, the fans would draw outside air into the radiator, but I intend to pull the air from inside the case to the outside. This is because I will have a fan at the bottom drawing in air and the case already has two fans in the front, also pulling in air. Good idea??? Please advise on my intentions, thanks

b.) Order placed !!!

MB: ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z - LGA 1155
MEMORY: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 [ x2 ]
SSD: Kingston SSD 128G 128GB SATA III
MOUSE: Logitech G300

c.) GPU: ASUS EAH6850 DC/2DIS/1GD5/V2 Radeon HD 6850
> Still thinking about this one. (By the way, THANKS SKOOBS for your 560 TI recommendation)

Dear Santa smile.gif ---> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130604 (EVGA 01G-P3-1561-AR GeForce GTX 560 Ti) Yes Santa, I don't need the new 7970; but if you insist. smile.gif

And folks....please recommend any others that are out there, thanks. < $200
Arrrrrgh, should I up it to $300 for my limit? thinking.gif

d.) Memory coolers - Do I really need something like this? --> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118058 Hmmm ...couldn't I just make one? Ideas please. smile.gif

[UPDATE: #2] Received all my components about 2 days ago and have started to build......

NOTE: There are so many great folks here and I thank each and every one of you for your feedback in my selection of components.

In visiting the other [BUILD LOGS], I know what I have (and what I can afford) doesn't really compare.

Overall, I am just inspired by this forum and hope to put together the "BEST SYSTEM" for me smile.gif Thanks.

1.) CPU, Memory and SSD: (Having some difficulties with the Kingston frown.gif -- CheckSum issues when installing Windows 7

337
375

2.) Corsair H80 Water Cooler:

337

3.) PSU: I hope 650W is enough. I've shouldn't have purchased this because it was on sale (doh!)

337

4.) GPU: ASUS EAH 6850 --> I wish I had more $$$ for my GPU but realize I had crossed the $1K mark. Anyways, I am still happy and content. thumb.gifthumb.gif

337
337

5.) Motherboard: Asus Maximus IV Gene
337

6.) Speakers: Cyber Acoustics --> I plugged my mp3 player to this and amazing; completely satisfied smile.gif They were only $30!
337

7.) Miscellaneous: Extension cables and LED light --> I hope to make everything nice and clean with proper cable management.
337

Have the motherboard, CPU, memory and H80 installed smile.gif
337

Next Up:
A.) Address the PSU by covering some of the cables with black heat shrink wraps.
B.) Install the Red LED fan at the bottom
C.) Put in GPU (and install Battlefield 3 smile.gif )

Heads (Yes) .... Tails (No)... What should I do? Already have 6850's crossfire. What performance gain would I achieve with this card?

xfire 6850 still packs a punch tbh.
