First i7 O.C...Need help

Hey guys. After over a year of owning my i7 950, I've finally decided to overclock it. I read a few guides, but I'm still pretty unsure about what I'm doing. My goal is to reach 4ghz with the lowest amount of vcore possible.I know little about CPU Overclocking, so I'd appreciate some of your help.

The settings are:
21x Multiplier
191 Bclk

DRAM Frequency: 1531 MHz

1.325V CPU voltage
1.35 QPI voltage
1.65 DRAM Bus voltage

RAM @ 8-8-8-24

Everything else is on auto.

So far I'm able to run Prime95 on Blend for about an hour before I get a BSOD. Temps monitored by RealTemp peak at 74c. I don't want to keep bumping my CPU vcore because of temps.

I've tried a 23x multiplier w/ 174 Bclk, but I'm getting the same results.

So what do you guys think? My air cooling is very good, and I don't think it's a problem. All my other voltages are on auto, so I'm thinking I'll have to do some fine tuning. I'd like my vcore closer to 1.25 and temps closer to 70.

Thank you so much for giving me some of your time and I really appreciate any feedback.

Happy New Year.

what error does the bsod give you? 00000 or 000124? also what is your voltage at full load? get cpuz and look at the voltage because maybe you have llc disable and the voltages are droping under full load. also your memory timings are tight. try to loosen up the memory and after you are 100% sure that the cpu is stable start to tight the timing again until unstable.

To be honest, I don't know anything about BSOD Errors or how to even accurately determine what errors I got. I included a screenshot of the Windows Error Window and the BlueScreenView program window. Hopefully you'll be able to determine what I got. If not, let me know how to properly figure it out.

I forgot to mention that the DRAM Frequency was at 1531 MHz. I updated the original post.

CPU-Z reports 1.320V with 100% CPU Load (prime95). In the BIOS, the setting is 1.325V.
What do you recommend for RAM timings? Let me know what other voltages should be adjusted too. I'll check back in tomorrow.

Thanks a bunch.

start with ram at 9-9-9-24

you could try to raise the qpi/vtt to 1.40v so you could get some more stability with that high bclk clock. your ram voltages seems fine because the frequency is pretty much what the ram is designed to run. i like the use the 21X multiplier on the 920. my motherboard has no issues with high bclk clocks and i am sure that your is also happy at high bclk so i dont see the need to run 23x. make sure that on the processor options you disable all power saving features along with the speed step features. it helped me on my overclock. also one last thing. are you using that computer for gaming or for benchmarking or video/photo editing? the reason i ask is because if you are using it for gaming there is no need at all to use hyper threading. i alwasy refused to turn it off because thats one of the reasons that i got an x58 board but when i did turn it off i got better performance in games. higher fps and just smoother game play. the added benefit of not running hyper threading is that the chip runs cooler and you could run higher clocks than you would with ht turned on. one last thing. remember that not all i7s are the same and some chips do not like to overclock and you have got to give them a hell of alot of voltage to hit 4.2 ghz. here is a good guide that was made for the i7 920 which is the same as the 950 if you run the 950 at 21x. http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overclocking/22106-core-i7-overclocking-guide-beginners.html

Thanks for the reply. It's mainly a gaming PC, so I'll probably turn off HT. I also forgot to specify that 4GHz was the goal. Anyways, I appreciate the tips and will reply tomorrow with results!

Oh, should I turn Turbo Mode off too?

yes turn all that stuff off. good luck! 4 ghz shouldnt be to hard. i think with the higher qpi/vtt voltage it should get there. if you can get some pictures of the bios setting it would be good. i am not familiar with that board so if i see a picture i and anyone that is familiar with x58 chips could probably help you more.
