Budget $750: Core i5 2500k possible?

Thread Starter
My friend wants to build a computer with $750 he has, that's the limit to his budget. He does moderate gaming but he probably won't overclock for a while, but he wants to keep the oppurtunity open with a 2500k. Is it possible to make a good budget build?

Any advice on a good build would be helpful <3

Edit: Already have OS, don't need any cooler (he'll use stock until he decides to overclock),

He only has $750 before rebates, so rebates won't help much.

What kind of gaming does he do? Do you have a Microcenter located near you? From what it sounds like, if you want an i5 2500k you're going to be cutting some corners on quality but for $750 it defiantly is possible.

I'd recommend an H60 or H80 cooler. But as for keeping budget if you don't have a microcenter near you that processor eats up about 1/3 of his budget haha.

It's very possible, however I do have to ask the very important question: Is this everything, or just the main components? I think I build one on here recently for someone else that was ~$700 after rebates for an entire build (OS, keyboard, etc.)

I'm not entirely sure, but nothing hardcore. If he could play Skyrim on just medium it'd be fine.

Also, he does have one near him!

No need for a CPU cooler for the moment, he'll just use stock until he decides to overclock.

Just the main components and stuff, he already has the OS. Keyboard and mouse might be needed, but a cheap one will do.

lol

op is on a very tight budget and you recommend one of the most overrated, underperforming in terms of price and unnecessary part for his pc rolleyes.gif

heck even a hyper 212 have no problems handling an overclock 2600k

he doesnt need a 2500k,

buy a 2100 with a lowend H or midrange Z68/P67 board, and put Ivy in it later if it's really needed.
the rest of the budget can go towards a decent PSU and better Graphics card.
those parts are better purposed and will last him longer.

it sounds like he's got storage already?
700$ is actually a pretty massive budget for a moderate gamer if we're referring to just the cost of the box.
you've laid out some specifics, and it's good that you've already listed the purpose of the build, but it will help us help you to list the components your friend is going to need.

Since he has a Microcenter near him, he can get a 2500k + Mobo for $50 off which is going to be better than any online deal. So just buy that from Microcenter and nothing else. I suck at budget builds but you can get 8gb (2x4) G.Skill RAM for around $40. So I'm guessing you could get the CPU and MoBo for around $270-300.
  • CPU
  • MoBo
  • RAM
    ~$310-340

    Case
    PSU
    HDD
    CD/DVD
    OS
    Video Card - The Killer
~$410-440 to spend between all of that.

Select what you want based on that available budget. A case can be whatever price you can think of. A decent PSU will be around $60-80 for a single GPU solution. A HDD only God knows. CD/DVD is dirt Cheap, OS is $99 for OEM.

Very possible if you hit the sales right, as long as he doesn't need a monitor. If he does, it depends on how much RAM, what video card, etc.

My build without the OS and cooler was almost exactly $750 (before rebates). I got a great deal on my 2500k (had to go to microcenter), a lot was on sale, and I was able to get good deals on some of the other parts using newegg promotional codes I found on this site.

Some of the parts are more expensive now, so he can't necessarily get the same quality (for example my hard drive was $59 when I got it, now its $150).

With research, willingness to drive to stores for in-store sales, and patience, its possible.
